A nippy early Autumn morning in North Welly with clear skies and the first dew of the year a heavy one – making the whole back lawn wet. Two pukekos below my kitchen window when I went to make some breakfast at 7.30 am. Waiting patiently, with just a couple of low peeps from Sweetie & the pair of them looking up – hopeful expressions on their cute-looking faces.

Then some high pitched insistent whining (as usual 🙄) & Pickles jumped up the fence, walked along the top of the low trellis, flapped down, and joined them. Then backed off from them a foot or two because they resent the little whippersnapper gatecrashing their morning ritual of being first in the queue outside Gezza’s kitchen.

They have learned “Good morning pookies, just wait, having my coffee first”. Then I uplift the little ziplock plastic bag of today’s wheat supply, open my back door screen, & they’re on the lawn, wary but hungry.

I feed Aspen & Sweety on the fence posts and runners now. Aspen’s still very wary & I have to back away & point to the grains before he’ll fly up four or five feet away & cautiously walk along the paling tops & pick the grains up, one a time.

Sweetie’s already learned the routine & jumps up onto the flower box, then the fence top, as soon as I go to the fence, and she too walks cautiously along towards me as I move equally carefully, ask “Sweetie … want some food?” and tell her “Good girl” as she bends down & starts eating the wheat grains from between my fingers as I’m letting them drop into a little heap.

Any sudden moves will spook them & see them shriek with alarm & back away, or fly down either side of the fence & keep their distance until I can calm them down with a stream of gentle, soothing phrases. I try my best not to spook them. There’s an inexplicable magic about this routine for me. Sweetie gets so close to my face sometimes I can’t film her.

Sweety wasn’t all that keen to have a camera in face this morning. New mums can be like that I guess.

Are you kidding me? Did you see how much her fee was?? And that’s not even mentioning off-camera payments.

OFF camera payments!? Who pays tax on this or is this Mr C. Ash stylz.
Whoz her manager? Does her fee cover make-up and hair?
What about her Transport and Who dresses her?
Is there catering delivered at the shoot?
I see I’m gonna have to send her a panui to inform her bout this week specials on
The Art of Being a Celebrity and How not to get RIPPED OFF by the pappz!.

          1. It’s wheat. I pay sales tax on it. She gets it tax free.
          2. She doesn’t have a Manager. She can look after herself, she reckons. She has everything she needs in the awa iti. This is just extras.
3.She does her own hair and makeup, thoroughly, several times a day. That’s why her feathers & plumage are so beautiful. No fee required. When she or the boys leave a stray black, white, or purple feather here on the ground, after a daily grooming session, they’re gorgeous, especially the delicately hued purple ones.
          4. Organises here own transport. Ecologically-minded. Air or land transport. No fossil fuels used.
          5. Dresses herself. Occasionally gets one of the boys to check for mites on her neck or the back of her head.
          6. Of course catering is delivered at the shoot. The poor bloody cameraman has to do the lot.
          7. She already knows how not to get ripped off by the paparazzi. If you want to see her star in more movies – don’t blow it.
          😀

There’s something not quite right about the cameraman having to pay for the privilege of making her world-famous in NZ, but I can’t quite work out what it is ::D

It’s only when I’m going through these video clips I notice how much birdsong there is in most of them. Am I just lucky or is there that much birdsong around everywhere, but we just never notice it.

Last Spring & summer I happened to be up early enuf to catch the first bird singing to start off the Dawn Chorus. The air was so still and it’s still dark when they start up. I recorded three mornings worth of Dawn Choruses once they got underway. Could even hear a shining cuckoo one morning, although you never see them.

The song thrush is very noticeable. An absolutely beautiful melody of many parts.

There IS a lot of birdsong around, or there is here, Some beautiful, some not. The walkway is a bit quiet at the moment, for some reason.

I HAVE seen shining cuckoos, but didn’t know what they were so assumed them to be odd-looking thrushes. They have visited my garden ! I bet that one day some peasant will cut all the trees down and the birds will go, too,

Man Aspens feathers are huge. Looks like he has got a meal in there alrighty. Good filming bro … steady as a rock.

Thanks sis. Those two years old 2mp 3G mobiles of mine have some kind of stabilizing component in their videoing software I suspect. As long as I hold them as steady as possible, they record footage without too much wobbling about.

They also both have a pause button so I can pause filming and resume which saves wasted time waiting for the birds to do something when they’re faffing about.

My Nokia5 smartphone has much higher resolution but no stabilising when I’m filming & it picks up every little movement, dammit. I can “stabilise” the video clip as part of its Edit function, but the results always include some shimmer which is annoying.

And the damn thing’s got no pause button. What idiots wouldn’t include a pause button when older, less sophisticated cellcams did? 😦

I picked up a little Sony compact camera with an 8x zoom. Waiting for a memory card to see what that videos like.

I was astounded with the bird song we don’t get that in the bush.
I notice when I go to big towns cities the birds are so loud they sound
            almost frantic.
In the morning the birdsong here is gentle and always full of melody.

You have it all …bird life, tuna life, clear stream and you live right in the middle of the concrete metropolis. NW just a short trip away with cream donuts and raspberry buns. With some great gibbous moons. What more could a ….

97.8% waxing gibbous rising above the Eastern hills, with gaps in some low foreground clouds being lit up in colours. God I love watching the moon. I so envy the Apollo astronauts who walked on it, and who watched the Earth rise with no foreground clouds. I would never have the courage or the brainpower to have been one of them.

    Full moon 1st of April.

Possum’s been asking where you are. I assumed you were on the run 🕶.

You realise that with a full moon on 1 April strange folk won’t only be howling at the moon, they’ll be barking idiots as well 😮
