Site notice – commenting policy

There is going to be a change to the comments policy here.

There has been a lot of leniency given, with comments being allowed that openly conflict with the editorial position of this site. Too many people have been taking advantage of that, and to be frank I am sick of people expressing different opinions to my own.

From now on comments must be at least close to aligning with what I want expressed here or they may deleted. They will be shown as [Deleted – not aligned with site opinion].

I’m aware that it may not always be clear what my opinion is on topics, but too bad. If you get it wrong, whether deliberately or accidentally, your comment may be deleted.

I can give some guidance – for those who think I am leaning too far right, you need to shift your shifting to the right (some of you substantially). And for those who think I am leaning too far left, likewise, you will have to shift your thinking leftward. I’m aware that some will be unbalanced by this but you will get used to it in time.

This will ensure a much more interesting blog, especially for those who agree with me.

Most interesting on today of all days

    • I thought that Easter Sunday was appropriate – a new beginning sort of thing. It could lead to this becoming a cult blog.

I couldn’t agree more. (Seems to be my safest policy.)

Further guidance may be gained by reviewing the posts on the WO site.

Your new commenting policy has nothing to do with today’s date being April 1st, does it?

Excellent, like Gezza this the best policy for the first day of April, wonder if the Standard will take the opposite view just for one day!

April fool haha you old fool…a d not even a very good one

[This one was too funny to delete – especially as it appears to be from one of our occasional visitors in disguise. Happy Easter SB.]

    • I don’t often comment here Pete but when I do it is ALWAYS under my own name. I have NEVER pretended to be someone else so the joke is on you I am afraid. I actually am the champion of old white men like you. I have even introduced a new slot to Whaleoil called Old white man of the day which is very popular.

This was a good April fool’s post and quite funny.
By the way, the blog you like to make fun of is the first Media in New Zealand to introduce audio articles. Now our readers are also listeners. So if your eyesight isn’t what it used to be or you want to do other things while catching up on Whaleoil articles so you can find some content for your own blog you can. Scroll to the bottom of most articles and push the little triangle to play. We have different voices and we are currently in the trial stage. Not bad for a niche blog LOL

      • ‘Albert’ uses the same IP address as you, and has done so in the past with an apparent connection with WO. I apologise if that was not you commenting today.

You seem to be a bit sensitive to ‘being made fun of’. It’s a bit ironic given the extent of criticism of other media by WO, especially given how much you rely on them for content these days.

You seem to rate WO as a major media enterprise. You should expect some critiques from time to time.

        • I’m not at all worried about your ‘ critiques’ as you call them. We find them very amusing. I only commented because you had incorrectly identified me as the person who posted under an alias. As for our content what you think of it isn’t relevant as it is what our subscribers think of it that counts. We must be doing something right since people pay for access to our blog. Since you are not a Silver subscriber you cannot see all our original content from our paid writers that is published 5 days a week from Incite magazine. You also cannot use our online crossword, view our exclusive political polls etc Our revenue is what is funding all our new services like our latest service, Audio blogs. We have more planned. If what we do is so easy and no big deal then why haven’t you managed to grow your audience and make a living from it like we have?

          • “If what we do is so easy and no big deal then why haven’t you managed to grow your audience and make a living from it like we have?”

Is it easy and no big deal? I thought it would have been an ongoing challenge, one that most commercial media face.

I’m quite happy with where things are at here. I don’t feel a need to grow the audience, and i want to make a living from it, it’s a hobby and a public service. I think that keeping this site advertising free fits with it’s ideals of being beholden to no one. You even say you let Google’s commercial requirements influence your moderation. I don’t want that here.

          • “I only commented because you had incorrectly identified me as the person who posted under an alias.”

Fair enough – you’re free to comment in response here, something that WO rules out as part of site policy.

I note that I have correctly identified ‘Albert’ as using the same IP address as you, your comment confirmed that. Obviously that could be someone other than you.

      • “So if your eyesight isn’t what it used to be or you want to do other things while catching up on Whaleoil articles so you can find some content for your own blog you can.”

        WO posts so far today:
        – Daily proverb
        – Word of the day
        – Face of the day
        – General debate
        – Touting for subscriptions
        – Daily crossword
        – Audrey Young has stopped drinking the Kool-Aid too (sourced from NZH)
        – On Gareth Hughes (video from Gareth Hughes

Can you please let me know when you have a post that uses some of your own content.

As Kool Aid is not even sold here, I wish that people who keep using this cliche would find something else to use as one !!!

This appears to be encouraging group think so it will be very interesting to see how it goes. Even the whale allows a level of dissent provided it doesn’t get personal and has a few calories.
    There could be some attrition.

Happy Easter Gezza. I got stragglers. Waifs and strays sadly. I’m in Mudgee, NSW this weekend and I am entertained by all manner of our avian friends. It’s more what I haven’t seen. From King parrots down to tiny, dear wee robins. Roos morning and evening and I even had a frog in my loo this evening.

Any purple swamp hens – and are they as personable as mine? 😳
