Manson at his peak. Best viewed as a short film of the surrealist genre.

The pooks are now in India and the US 😀

      • A strong norwester has been blowing steadily all day – in fact as nightfall approached it got even stronger.

Having to paint in it was awful. The chill factor plus the grey skies made it not worth filming the pukekos or ducks today. Too unpleasant to be standing around in that wind.

The stream’s about 20 feet down, so the parenga acts as a windbreak – on the bank they’re in the lee of the wind. Pickles was less whiny today. I’m treating him like a toddler having a trantrum. If he starts screaming and carries on I chuck him some wheat and go inside, and that’s his lot!

Sweety was determined to get her special feed up on the fence tonite about 6.30 pm. She should be in bed, It’s getting dark at that time. The wind gusts were so strong it was all she could do to stay upright in it. She got blown off the edge several times: hung on only by gripping the edges grimly with her long toes & claws and flapping back upright. Two feeds and that was it! She can be as coy as she like, it was bloody cold & unpleasant out there.

Even the wheat grains were blowing of the runners and fence tops. Finally gave up and hopped off the fence onto the stream bank about 7pm.

Baby pooklet Jojo was only seen this morning: but I expect she’s just been out of the wind somewhere. I could hear her peeps down the bank somewhere opposite the eel stump at lunch time. I worry about the babies if I can’t see them each day. They’re vulnerable at this age – to predators and the elements.

Bluey was just visible in the dusk in the nest when I was feeding Sweety, so I’m sure he’s cuddling a little black fluffball & keeping her warm. He’s a good dad.

Meantime, here’s the 4th duck flight of the local squadron arriving on a beautiful morning yesterday to join the flotilla. The duck whanau seem to have their own territorial patches of stream and move outsiders on. Most the ducks have paired up now. A few solitary hens &drakes are still courting.

Sorry G, can’t share your enthusiasm. Gone off birds since one of the bastards chased me down the Matukituki valley a few years back

I tried out my Schaller Oyster acoustic guitar pickup the other day. Bought it 30 months ago at Porirua MusicWorks, looking to electrify one of my 1/2 classicals, seeing I couldn’t find an electric one for any reasonable price.

It wasn’t cheap – it came with no bloody instructions, it’s a short cylindrical meatl pot, had a really thin lead but a fat jack, and a weird little grey plastic jarish-thing about the same dimensions that you couldn’t open and whose function was a mystery because for this pickup, as I mentioned there were NO BLOODY INSTRUCTIONS – at all ! Not even a bloody picture. And the shop guy said they’d could fit it internally for me for and extra $50.

Anyway I was busy doing other stuff at the time so I chucked it in a drawer & mentally filed it in the ‘not the wisest impulse buy’ category.

I pulled it out a month back and left it on the lounge china dresser. Finally googled it a couple of days ago. You have to google their site to get the instructions ! The grey pot contains a special putty. You smear it on the base of the oyster, and you plonk it on the guitar top and move it around until you find the best balance of sound to suit you and to avoid feedback from the resonating/vibrating soundboard when it’s in the wrong place.

Feckin excellent sound quality. So I can make any of my 3 classical acoustics electric now. With one pickup. 8)

Thin lead and fat jack makes a good humbucker

Well, there was another plus. In between painting & getting my grey matter squeezed against the inside of my cranium by the constant gale blowing into my right ear hole, I decided to rip out a cheapo pickup – that never impressed – via the soundhole and try doing the same thing with that one and some blue tack. Yay! Way better. 😎

Now I just have to sand, paint and polyurethane the soundboard where I’d placed the cord and the metal jackpoint. A good end to the week.

I watched an old french waltz today played by a virtuoso through a system that sounded like shit. Could have been the axe, dunno. I’ll see if I can find it and throw it up. Interested in your thoughts

Not a patch on me ducks’ flippers, plus mine can fly! Mind you, getting shoes for me pooks is a fruitless task. They have size 30 bird feet. 😕

Al, are any of your clients or friends still running XP for anything? What are they using for their Security system if so?

Google’s telling me Avast is the best. I’ve not been using the old one in music room to access the net. Used to use an ethernet connection for that and wireless for this lappy. Since I’m on fibre now it’s all wireless so I’ve ordered a USB wireless connector. I’d like to connect to the net from that machine from time to time, to update my music system.

Don’t you love the way that they waterski so effortlessly when they land ?

I’ve only recently happened to catch them dropping in en masse, or in several small groups in the morning, Kitty. I didn’t realise they came from quite far away & fky to this particular spot.

Once the first flight landed I looked up and saw others high up, heading my way & wondered if they were going to land in my patch of stream or with one of the several different hapu of ducks further north upstream, because they were so high.

But no, they landed in my patch. And they did it by just dropping out of the sky & flaring out onto the water at the last minute. Two or four would land & straight away be followed by others zooming in too. No crashes on the runway yet, but it gets crowded in the narrows.
