NZDF spending on Thiel’s Palantir

Another dogged investigation by Matt Nippert:

The New Zealand Defence Force has spent millions on controversial spy software produced by secretive Silicon Valley firm Palantir.

After refusing for more than a year to reveal the extent of links to Peter Thiel’s big data analysis company, prompting a complaint by the Herald on Sunday to the Ombudsman, the NZDF were forced to disclose annual spending with Palantir averaged $1.2 million.

The figures suggest since contracts were first signed in 2012 the defence force has spent $7.2m with the firm.

Thiel’s New Zealand citizenship has been controversial given how little time he has spent here.

God knows what Thiel says about NZ in private.Fast track citizenship after spending 12 days here, pockets over $20 mil profit from an MBIE scheme ,and 7.2mil from a defence force contract.Good work if you…can get..it.

Nobody will ever convince you that that wasn’t the way his citizenship happened.

Good to see the NZDF investing in the future with an effective company. Makes a nice change to them squandering cash on obsolete systems.

The budget for the NZDF is around $2bn per year. You really think that an expenditure of $1.2m is worthy of a public cost benefit analysis?

Do you have even the slightest idea about the services they are buying, or what the competitive market for those services are?

The profit for ANZ bank in a year is more than $1.5billion a year.
You really think it’s significant if someone steals $1.2m off them?`

A good comparison to have would be how much they spend on Microsoft, because 1.2m doesn’t seem a lot to me

  4. Sooo….

An Agency that relies on great intelligence to save NZ Lives in the field of operations, invests in specialised big data tech to analyse data gathered, make connections to get better intelligence to allow better in field decision making….. potentially saving NZ lives

    Yip – sounds controversial….

Is this all because Thiel supports Trump? and therefore is not a leftie?

    Agenda’s anyone?

Particularly when a tech entrepreneur like KDC with a les than exemplary past is actively supported by our leftie media to stay in NZ….

The fact Blazer doesn’t like Thiel and his company is almost the best online recommendation you could get!

Yeap, that’s all they have against him, or his companies.

    • dont know about the deal you refer to.

But what’s you actual beef with NZDF using Palantir? Take Thiel out of the equation… what’s are the problem?

” Thiel was a heads you win, tails I lose, for the hardworking NZ ..taxpayer.”

Explain the cost to the NZ taxpayer of Thiel’s citizenship.

Explain the cost to the NZ taxpayer of many people who’d like to come here, and would come here if allowed to do ordinary jobs and be given citizenship.

        • Gezza

           /  April 8, 2018

Hard to quantify but most likely a reduction in wages and maybe conditions for New Zealand workers in those types of jobs.

What do you think the cost or the result would be?

          • duperez

             /  April 9, 2018

No idea, but if one good ordinary hard working person comes here and makes a positive contribution they have added rather than cost us.

The way our world works we don’t want them, they are valueless. If they’re super rich though they’re automatically an asset. Want to buy citizenship? It’s for sale, so let’s make as much money as possible out of that. I don’t know why we muck around with complicated paperwork, just advertise citizenship for sale on ebay or Trademe.

               /  April 9, 2018

If we took all the people who want to come here our mob would end up growing rice, working for peanuts like they do back home, even fewer houses, some of which would collapse, a really wrecked health system with overloaded hospitals and some would be living in slums & bribing officials not to inspect them.. Entry to wealthy is generally based on what investments they can make that will grow our country’s economy and/or create jobs. The numbers are pretty small. Get a fucking grip/

               /  April 9, 2018

Plus in no time we’d be having race riots, massive organised crime, and probably Islamic terrorism. I see something on aljaz that the police have arrested 6 people somehow involved or suspected to be with yesterday’s car attack. Something said about one or some of them thought to be involved with the previous Berlin attack.

            • duperez

               /  April 9, 2018

I’ve been told to get a grip. I do have a grip. I proved it by saying we should just advertise citizenship for sale on ebay or Trademe. Sell citizenship to the highest bidders. (Naturally Muslims, regardless of money would not be allowed.)

              Or women like this:
              http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11836018

I mean what use is she? She’d be causing race riots, massive organised crime, and probably Islamic terrorism. She would be growing rice, working for peanuts like she would back home, causing houses to collapse, wrecking the health system and overloading hospitals and living in a slum & bribing officials not to inspect it.

Another thing this woman has done to bring our country down is have some people treasonously suggesting that ordinary people doing ordinary things, wanting to live ordinary lives, are as important as rich Americans like Peter Thiel. Being a fashionable accoutrement and bunkerhaven for the likes of Thiel should be our aim. Polluting it with opportunists from the Philippines, South Africa or wherever risks disillusioning the Thiels of the world band we can’t have that.

How’s that for getting a grip?
