There’s a distinct lack of pukeko in my personal suburban Dorkland dystopia!

My specialist subject would have to be: “Scandinavian Metal from 2000 on”; but obviously that’s not acceptable here so I’m reduced to mining the charts of yesteryear, and ancestral memories.

Well, you know, black outlook bang thump loud horrible death crash metal croak croak everybody die – I’ve had enuf battles with anxiety & depression in my life. Who needs more?

I find the slow yet heavy, gloomy stuff strangely comforting in my more excruciating moments. (e.g.’funeral doom metal’. The Finns do it best, must be those long winters.)

I think I can understand that but these days I’d think it would be encouraging me to wallow in my gloom & that’s never a great place to be & bathing in what reflects it’s never proven helpful. I accept people have to find their own ways to handle things like this though.

      Profiles of the Actors

BLUEY. The koro. About 5 years old I think. Possibly the dad of Pickles and Jojo, although Aspen is an outside possibility. Wary. Staunch. Very attentive pooklet dad, and the most protective. Always does the night shift keeping the pooklets warm & safe in the nest. Enforces daytime naps for them when they’re very young. I would not get between him and the pooklet when they are very little. He overcomes his natural timidity and threatens attack. Can be talkative. Generally a stable sort of character. The boss, but a relaxed one. Own man. Lumbering flyer. Not the best at precision landings but gets the job done and prefers to walk whenever he can, anyway.

ASPEN. The apprentice. 18-24 months old. Fascinated with the human who owns Pookden Manor. Spending a bit much time in the back yard, could do a bit more mahi in & around the stream, where he belongs, tbh, but his curiosity and interest in whatever I’m doing is endearing. Will try for treats but if none are forthcoming is happy to just perch somewhere safe or graze my lawn, keeping an eye on me. Will not approach me any closer than about 3 feet. Not a dominant male bird, highly strung. Intelligent & clever, for a pukeko. There isn’t a thing he hasn’t tried to get my attention. Somewhat clumsy flyer, but adequate to get up into all sorts of vantage points for observing & getting my attention. Reasonable caregiver, but only does short shifts on the nest when pooklets very small.

SWEETY. The only young lass among the adults. About 9 months I think. Very girly. Coy. Knows how to charm me up. Shocker for it in fact. Will eat and eat and eat, and just keep batting her eyelids for more. Should be as big as a house but still looks pretty trim. Comes the closest. Loves to be sweet-talked in a soothing voice. Still wary – but most days comes right up to me on fence and will take bread from my hand and grain from between my fingers as I put it down. Scared of open palm though. Only eaten from that twice. Very good flyer. Landing speed and approaches always perfect. Precision landings everytime. Can land on a 4×4 washing line post without flapping about to keep balance. The two other adults can’t do that.

PICKLES. Born 3 January. Named after his aunty Pickled Possum (who is yet to send him a present). Was a sweet baby who charmed his granddad Gezza and aunties Kitty & Possum with his gutsiness and cutesy begging behaviours. Spectacular growth, went through several different growth and change spurts – legs and feet, growth of feathers, changes of plumage colour, changes of beak colour. Only recently learnt to fly but extremely good at it. Not confident at flapping down into restricted space landing area but will master that. Aspen’s shadow. Very whiny young pook though. Even annoys the adults who give him a clip around the feathers and chase him off away from them sometimes. Still pretty self-absorbed and selfish with food but does have the feeding instinct for Jojo, possibly learned from watching the others.

JOJO. Born 23 March. The current baby. Just gorgeous. Very chatty. Red coloured plate and base of beak, although not obvious in the movie. Pickles’ was black. Very attentive already to grooming and appearance. Quite a good climber already. Confident walker. Not as whiny as Pickles was at her age. Has little frilly feathers on head and wings I didn’t notice on Pickles as a baby. Hoping it’s a girl. We’ll see. Useless flyer – only got little penguin wings. Flaps them about delightfully when begging for food from adults – seems to work – they queue up to feed Jojo.

The next baby can be called Kiki.

I wonder how many people cried ‘There she is !’ when she suddenly appeared.

Well, we can’t really tell completely yet what sex they are so for any others in future it has to be a name that could fit either sex.

          Kiki’s a girl’s name.

If I go for a person’s name at the moment I’ve got
          Jessie
          Frankie
          Gezlet
or it could be a place name or something.

Yes but I can just change the spelling to Jesse without having to change the pronunciation and confuse the little tyke.
Can’t really tell the gender until breeding season.
Kit, I’ll add – might be a front runner to keep the peace. (That should make you happy – you aunties are pretty competitive.)

Ahem. Aunty Kitty hasn’t had a pooklet NAMED AFTER HER yet.
When you get a pooklet named after you it’s a Pookden Manor custom to give the baby a special present. Dates back hundreds of hours. Can be a link to something you feel appropriate. Doesn’t have to cost anything but time …. 😳

Well, Gez didn’t she display her hooters in that movie with Hugh Jackman??
And isn’t she a bit of a diva, how many husbands has she had NOW?
Pretty, but beauty isn’t everything ya know bro. 😉

I was thinking Angela Bassett who plays Tina in What’s Love Got to do With It’
she also played Betty (Shabazz) X Malcolm’s wife in Malcolm X
Rosa Parks in the Rosa Parks Story

Also… Angela Bassett is a supporter of programs for the arts, especially for youth.
She annually attends events for children with diabetes and those in foster homes.
She is an active Ambassador of UNICEF for the United States.
Bassett is a supporter of the Royal Theater Boys & Girls Club in
her hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Bassett was initiated as an honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority on July 13, 2013.

        Actress and activist extraordinaire.
Yep, she’ll do nicely I reckon!!
Please Ring Taika and inform him of my selection. 😎

God Pickles reminds me so much of little human boy toddler sometimes. 😀

Ya can’t anthropomorhising them. Everything goes into his mouth. Whjatever it is – gotta bite it. In case it might be something yummy or interesting. He was just out the back slider I noticed as I snuck past. I’ve got one of those old-fashioned wavy weave rubber mates for wiping ya muddy feet. There he was pick, pick, picking at it with his beak, trying to pull a piece out..

Me: (low register quiet but disapproving voice): “Pickllllles … What are you doing? Noooooo! Naughty boy. Stop that” >:D
Pickles: (Walking away, onto the lawn, looking guilty, trying to look innocent, glancing back with an expression that says): “Who, me? Nothing … nothing …. Just looking around” o_O

    A Pome by The Dog

I have to run, I beg your pardon,
There’s a hedgehog in my garden,
Comes each night to eat the slugs,
    Ants and snails and other bugs;
    Thinks that he’s a brilliant ‘slugger’;
I’m just off to chase the bugger
    Out.
