Northcote by-election candidates

Greens have announced their candidate for the Northcote by-election – Rebekah Jaung selected as candidate for Northcote

Jaung wasn’t on the Green list in 2017 but stood in the Northcote electorate. She got 6.73% of the vote, almost the same as the party vote for the electorate which was 6.75%. This is slightly better than the 6.27% overall Green party vote.

Greens have been criticised for standing a candidate as it makes it much harder for the Labour candidate Shanan Halbert, but an upset was unlikely anyway (he lost by 6210 votes in the general election), and Greens need to be showing they are not just a party supporting Labour’s interests.

Candidates announced so far (Wikipedia):

  • Stephen Berry (ACT) – 2017 candidate for East Coast Bays, 5th on party list
  • Dan Bidois (National) – economist, 72nd on National’s 2017 party list
  • Tricia Cheel (Democrats) – social justice campaigner, 22nd on Democrats 2017 party list
  • Shanan Halbert (Labour) – head of Relationships at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, 2017 candidate
  • Rebekah Jaung (Greens) – doctor, Greens 2017 candidate for Northcote

Winston Peters has said the by-election is a waste of money and NZ First won’t stand a candidate, which will only save money for the party, and may be aimed at saving face (not putting NZ First to the test in an election).

Nominations close next Tuesday 15 May.

The by-election is in four weeks, on Saturday 9 June.

Sensible call from Peters it could have confirmed the awful regard he is probably held in.

Yep … but maybe Peters should have stood Kim Koloni after she made such an impression during the campaign with her Pauline Hansen-like race-hate speech to cries of “Shame, Shame” … ?

She might have won back the two Right Brigade voters from Northcote NZFirst lost after Winston’s ‘coalition-building’ betrayal of his own constituency?

Speaking of “shame” in the wider sense, such a pity about the decline of Social Credit, now ‘The Democrats’, who as late as 1987 achieved 5.7% of the popular vote … They were popular in the North Shore, East Coast Bays …

“Democrats for Social Credit describes its foremost goal as being the recovery of “economic sovereignty”.

This will be accomplished, the party says, by “the reform of the present monetary system, which is the major cause of war, poverty, inflation and many other social problems.”

The reforms promoted by Democrats for Social Credit are based on the ideas of Social Credit. The party emphasises “economic democracy”, claiming that control of New Zealand’s money supply must be reclaimed from the banks.

Democrats for Social Credit supports taxation reform, including the removal of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and the imposition of a tax on financial transactions (a Tobin tax). It also supports the introduction of a Universal basic income.

Democrats for Social Credit states that “what is physically possible and desirable for the happiness of humanity can always be financially possible.”” – Wikipedia

The transaction tax would be a pain in the bum to administer; poor shopkeepers !

It’s a bank transaction tax Miss Kitty … effortless for a computer to calculate, monitor and collect … also known as ‘Robin Hood Tax’ …

“A Tobin tax, suggested by Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences Laureate economist James Tobin, was originally defined as a tax on all spot conversions of one currency into another. Tobin’s original tax was intended to put a penalty on short-term financial round-trip excursions into another currency.

By the late 1990s, however, the term Tobin tax was being incorrectly used to describe all forms of short term transaction taxation, whether across currencies or not – another term for these broader tax schemes is Robin Hood tax due to tax revenues from the (presumably richer) speculator funding general revenue (of whom the primary beneficiaries are poorer). More exact terms however apply to different scopes of tax.”

Would have made the country a pretty penny on the kind of currency speculation John Key was involved in, at such a tiny rate it wouldn’t have affected anyone’s wealth … except the poor …

Hardly Pauline Hanson level, though….thank goodness.

She totally dropped off my radar too. I bet no one around my area would even know who she is. PZ has something of a talent for advertising people best left to stay sunk out of sight. 😉

It’s important not to forget the depths NZFirst plumbed to obtain sufficient votes so they had control of who coalesced into the government …

… and I like to remind those they betrayed of their betrayal …

“Into the valley of the shadow of death … voted the 600 … “

I don’t think anyone will forget. They’ve shat on plenty of voters they conned. What will be interesting is – they’ve got 2 1/2 years to find ways of suckering them again. Winnie may just figure if they were daft enuf to get taken for a ride once, they’ll be dumb enuf to take another NZF trip by the next election.

That old coot will live forever. You couldn’t kill him with an axe, as my mother would say.

  2. I don’t think that associating with WO is a great vote catcher.

If she’s claiming that, she’s a bloody liar and one can only hope that nobody’s stupid enough to believe it. I agree, she’s a liability and an embarrassment.

Of course, she may simply be delusional, in which case she has no place in any Parliament.

I haven’t seen her tweet. Must have a look. Probably way over the top but last I heard the IDF snipers had killed 146 unarmed protesting Palestinians so far and I dunno how many have been seriously wounded. She might be referring to that.

            * typo – 46 dead so far, not 146. The 15th is likely to see many shot that day.

I doubt it. How would they know who among them was gay ?

          • Gezza

             /  May 13, 2018

Nothing to do with being gay. Are you aware of what’s been happening at the Israel Palestine border for last two weeks or so? Well covered on Aljaz obviously but I think there may even have been ONE item on 1ewes. IDF snipers are killing and maiming large numbers of Palestinian protesters at the fence.

After several google queries I haven’t yet found anything where Ghahraman is actually accusing Israel of genocide. But I have found a concerted campaign by what look like Zionist-style Organisation repeating the claim as evidence of it itself, and WO is a known shill for the Israeli Government.

So who knows what she has actually said – she is certainly apparently commenting on this current slaughter.

Two posts crossed….I meant that these couldn’t be the claimed genocide victims who were Arab, gay or women whom Israel were slaughtering, according to her.I think that that claim was made a while ago.

NB; for people who claim to want gender equality, it’s odd that she and her ilk see killing women as worse than killing men, or certainly seem to.
