7.05 am. Dawn at Pookden Manor. The pooks have been observed in the half light in various locations performing their morning toilet, brushing their beaks and grooming, in preparation for their breakfast wheat and day’s mahi. The gate has been opened to permit access by Jojo.

Also observed on return from the fence, was a sparrow hen on the patio concrete. Lowering the clay birdhouse looks to have paid off. She was eating a small piece of bread from either the top or inside of the contraption, so it appears being unable to see the goodies from the fencetop was the problem yesterday.

It is currently overcast and has rained lightly at some point through the night. The stream is up, the wai is a semi-opaque olive colour and is clearing.

    Thank you. That is all.

      7.30 am
      Breakfast party has arrived

L to R: Sweety, Jojo, Pickles, Aspen

Bluey arrived separately 15 minutes after these guys had returned to the stream, as seems to be his habit.

@ Kitty – I feed the birds, including the sparrows, damp bread (only as a small treat for ‘afters’) because I read somewhere that dry bread can make some birds uncomfortable when it swells inside their tum tums.

Bluey came round to the kitchen after he’d eaten his wheat, wanting his bread dessert, so I threw out a little strip of the $1 wholemeal bread I get for them. He then took it over to the orange water bucket they drink from and dunked it before holding it in his “hand” and eating it.

He does this quite frequently, I’ve noticed.

It’s all right if there’s water there, and there is. The bread I use is quite moist.

Birds do NOT like soaked catbix.

I hope that not many people have wasted time and cat bix by soaking these, putting them on the bird table and then clearing them off again.

The day has been grey, cool, breezy, and intermittently wet. And now the wind has just changed to a rainy Southerly, at 5.30 pm, adding cold as the insult to the injury. >:D

Not good enuf, Jacinda. What are the Greens doing to the weather ! 😡

Last night I offered a ride home from the supermarket to Sister F, one of two retired Sisters of Mary who live a few doors down. She asked if I would like to see their garden & I walked thru to the most wonderfully laid out, beautiful, relaxing garden backing on to my stream. Very classic English Garden feel and look.

Looking down, I was able to point out to her my pook family, who had disappeared from around my place and gone under the bridge and were happily wombling around doing pook stuff on the little stony river-beach opposite.

She asked for links to my Gezza’s Stream video channels – so I emailed them to her last night.

Theirs is the place with the tall tree which my Summer clutch of four tuis was frequently flying into, frolicking in, and singing from. One was there – and she pointed out the bowl of sugar water suspended from one of its branches.

Magical night for a stargazer like me. The skies have miraculously cleared, the wind’s disappeared & the ‘seeing’ is excellent. The stream is still running high – it’s at a level where there are no rapids, and although I can’t see the wai in the dark, it’s in what I call perfect harmony – there is nothing coming from the flowing water but a steady “hiss”.

Barely a flicker from the stars. Jupiter is positively blazing yellow almost directly overhead, other stars & asterisms are sharp and bright as can be, and the Milky Way and the two Magellan Galaxies, are very very clear – stunning place to be on a night like this.

… and now, 30 minutes or so later, a mist, leaching off the Eastern & Western hills has drifted across the valley, obscuring the view of the night sky but producing a gorgeous surreal looking scene where lights from the school and a nearby buiness complex are creating hazy, moving patches of soft white light, and the street lights out front have cones of light extending from their apex down to the footpath and road.

I love all the special effects shows nature gives us for free, especially when I think of the millions movie producers spend trying to catch or recreate the exact same thing.

  5. This song is such a bright and bubbly gem. It so encapsulates my love of our world, albeit resplendent in tone rather than it’s rather tripped out lyrics.

I’m resolved to have it at my funeral …yep, true.

Must do a thread on funeral songs one day.

Eva has a perfect voice Gezza. I’m listening to Versatile an album of Van’s on SPOTIFY this morning. Affirmation is a song with a lot of flute and aahs and dinger ding dinging. Got to say I love a good flute. Setting the tone for my day I hope 😀all ver Zen. Eva would approve
