A quiet weekend

I’m enjoying a very quiet weekend.

I’ve spent the last three hours watching the morning gradually emerge from the darkness and the mist hanging over Porpoise Bay, looking east towards The Brothers and Chaslands Mistake, which are intermittently visible. As the sun rose it looked more like the Moon through the fog.

The only sounds are the white noise of gentle waves on the beach and the occasional bird making it’s  fleeting presence known.

Porpoise Bay is close to Curio Bay, known for it’s petrified forest visible at low tide. And it is not far from the southernmost tip of the South Island at Slope Point, which is a barren bit of ground with a very basic lighthouse.

There’s a much more traditional lighthouse not far further west at Waipapa Point.

So I’m only keeping a brief eye online at the moment. Catlins is one of my favourite places for enjoying time out.

Enjoy, Pete. Sometimes people are superfluous.

Looks nice. Left knee permitting I’m hoping to do the Te Araroa trail in a couple of years. It passes through this area…

At the end of the Port’s Water Race the track joins the Long Hilly Track. Turn left here and follow the track down past a number of sign-posted historic gold mining sites to the car park on Round Hill Rd.

The Long Hilly Track is an extremely popular daywalk, taking in a number of historic mine workings from what was once the largest Chinese mining settlement in New Zealand, dating back to 1874.

It’s peeing down here, and while the wind isn’t strong, it;s making a draught through the one window that needs a piece of draught stopper. I suppose that it’s keeping the house aired,

Oh, Con, that does sound fun – can I come too ? I love any historic place and am pea green to think that someone owns The Buried Village in Rotorua.

Really, PDT, you are becoming obsessive, a most unhealthy way to be. Do seek help for this. Do you comb through YNZ, looking for my name so as to downtick anything I write ? Too, too sad.

Sure you can come along no problem. Provided you meet some basic criteria. Can you…

Converse with Germans, Swiss, Poms, Czechs, French and Trump fans without boring them to death
Carry a 15kg pack 30kms through sand, tussock, mud and scree day after day
Cross a swollen river up to your waist without fear or complaint
Stop at every ganger shed and read every word on every wall
Refrain from stealing your host’s peanut butter
Happily sleep in a crowded hut with 18 snoring, farting fellow travellers

I have carried heavy packs and crossed a river up to my waist ( I did it despite my fear) There’s nothing brave about doing something that you’re not afraid of.

I like reading walls. I once read this gem

‘Half a pound of Many Rice,
        Half a pound of Keeler,
Put them both together and you’ve got a sexy sheila.’

it’s probably still there.I hope it is.

I must admit to disliking communal sleeping. Snoring is one of the world’s most annoying sounds :-/

Um. Did it actually say Mandy Rice, not Many Rice?

No, Mandy Rice. Mandy Rice-Davies wouldn’t have rhymed or scanned.

Er…you do know who she and Christine Keeler were ?

She’s the one who said ‘Well, he would, wouldn’t he ?’ and introduced that into the language.

Of course I know who those two lovely young ladies were.

You said on the wall was written
‘Half a pound of Many Rice,

I asked if it actually said Mandy.

PDT’s here in record time. I wonder how fast he’ll be this time 😀 On yer marks, get ready…..

I didn’t realise that I had made a typo and wondered why on earth you were asking that 😀

We have had one of the strongest winds that I can remember. Rain was blown under the door and through two windows, two branches came down (of course with the thin bits on the path so as to make them hard to remove) and a bush in a pot blew over, as did garden furniture. I escaped lightly, really, but it was frightening while it lasted. The rock wall nearby becomes a little waterfall when the rain is as heavy as this, and the water was being blown up like a little geyser.

10mm of rain in about 1 1/2 hours after I reached out and emptied the rain gauge.

The garden has little lakes on it,

I wonder how long it will be before the poor old PDT downticks this 😀 😀 😀

      Not long 😀 😀 😀

They must have that notification that tells them that a reply has been posted and race excitedly to YNZ to downtick it 😀 😀 😀

Especially in tramping huts. (They’re the ones that do all the farting.)

Someone I knew had to share a tent with someone who’d been eating deer liver, which I believe leaves kina nowhere when it comes to farting.

A tui’s in the tree….no, two of them are in it.

A former boss was in a lift with another man and a lot of women, The other man did a thunderous sulphur bomb just as he reached his floor, and said in a disgusted voice as he stepped out ‘You dirty bugger !’

I imagine that revenge was taken for this 😀
