Queen’s Birthday honours

There’s been comments elsewhere already on this but here’s a dedicated thread.

I’m not really interested myself but others obviously are.

Better than most honours lists over the past few years. I was pleased to see Bill English being knighted. I was expecting Aunty to become a Dame. But I’m sure that’s not too far away.

John Rowles has done a heap of charity work over the years. Ditto the Topps. Well deserved

The main thing is these people are getting real titles, not that bs New Zealand thing. Oh, maybe that’s why Aunty wont be getting a title.

It would be terrible to get a real thing not a New Zealand thing. What that hell is that about? Are New Zealand things for us not good enough?

When it comes to titles..no. The New Zealand thing has no mana. Queens titles do. If the Topps go to America, they would be introduced as Dames, in both formal and many informal situations. Helen Clark is just plain Helen Clark.

I would love to have a title so I could big note in London. Perhaps be invited to one of those stuffy Gentlemens Clubs where the shelia’s are kept out back to do catering and..er, entertain.

And, I’m sure given half a chance, Parti would love that gig…not that he’d ever admit to that.

Sorry about that , Zedd. The above comment was meant to be a stand alone.

      This ones for you:

”Sir Bill.. just after Sir John.. total B-S (services to the right-wing ?)”

No, services to New Zealand by keeping the standard of living we are accustomed to during very hard times. Benefits, Super, state housing, tax cuts and a gold standard international reputation.

Say what you like- I can’t see Jacinda delivering that.

That what the new govt is doing now considering National if still govt were to start paying down debt not extending it.

The new govt’s attitude now seems to be – we are doing well lets extend debt & if things go badly we will….extend debt. Can only end in tears (for taxpayers).

The irony that those who created the GFC,are still being rewarded is …repugnant.

Greece is persona non grata as far as lending institutions go…why?,it maxed out after a contoured assessment of National debt servicing capability, compliments of Goldman Sachs which allowed entry to the Euro and access to funds, that otherwise would not have been…facilitated.

Anyone who thinks that MPs and Ministers don’t work is an idiot who doesn’t know any. Yes, there is the odd lazy one who tends to be a one-term wonder like Pam Corkery who didn’t seem to have a clue.

I remember being in a car with a then Minister whose phone was going non-stop, and it was all to do with work, He said that on what was called his time off that he wouldn’t accept any engagements after 4 or 4.30 pm, I forget which, because he wanted to have some time to himself.

I can only think of one MP of the ones I have known for whom being one meant being paid more than she was earning before. The hours were much more too, of course.

Nobody becomes a Dame by marriage, so it would be a pointless study. Some have married into the aristocracy, I believe.

But being a Dame doesn’t make someone upper crust.

Mostly but not completely true, Kitty:
Formerly, a knight’s wife was given the title of “Dame” before her name, but this usage was replaced by “Lady” during the 17th century.

            • Kitty Catkin

               /  June 4, 2018

I was talking about now, when a knight’s wife is Lady Surname. The c.17 was some time ago. Nobody now marries into the title of Dame.

Dame was also used in the past as a courtesy title generally, generally of older women. A school mistress was also called a Dame.
