Voting will have just closed in the Northcote by-election. Results should be known tonight.
In the first week of advance voting numbers were well ahead of the same period during the general election, but they slowed down inn the second week, finishing up just ahead.
Total advance votes:
- 2017 general election 10755
- 2018 by-election 11464
All this means is that a few more people have voted early this time. It may or may not favour any candidate.

Alan Wilkinson
/ 9th June 20188:15pm National appears set to retain the Northcote seat with more than two-thirds of the vote counted.
Its candidate Dan Bidois has a 1000-vote lead over Labour’s Shanan Halbert with 72.7 per cent of the vote counted.
Bidois is on 7394 votes and Halbert is on 6368 votes.
Pete George
/ 9th June 2018Looks like a comfortable enough win for Bidois.
Labour will claim some success in reducing the margin but that was always likely to happen with a lower turnout that for the general election. But the gaps has still been closed.
Alan Wilkinson
/ 9th June 2018A long term MP always racks up a personal following on top of the party vote so that will always get lost at a change over.
Zedd
/ 9th June 2018In some of these electorates.. Natl could put up a ‘shop dummy’ in a suit with a Blue rosette pinned on & still win.. staunch
Gezza
/ 9th June 2018On the plus side Zedd, maybe this time their MP will actually have a personality?
Zedd
/ 10th June 2018.. like Mickey Mouse ?
Gezza
/ 10th June 2018Commendable young man according to someone who knows the family.
Zedd
/ 10th June 2018ho ho ho… 🙂 😀
Corky
/ 9th June 2018In some electorates Labour could put the Queen up as a candidate and still lose.
PDB
/ 9th June 2018What about Wellington central?
Corky
/ 9th June 2018Too many ‘Queens’
Gezza
/ 10th June 2018Nonsense. More on K Road I bet.
Trevors_Elbow
/ 10th June 2018In every electorate the Greens could put a real person ……. and not win the seat…. so a shop dummy is greater than a Green Candidate, which makes a huge amount of sense… so sayz I and I
chrism56
/ 9th June 2018No doubt all the Labour supporters will go on that they didn’t really expect to win it, it was a safe National seat and they have reduced the majority and it is a bad omen for Bridges. The fact that National got over 50% of the total vote is the relevant point. Labour gained, but only by cannibalizing it’s partners.
John Colbert
/ 9th June 2018Hardly a success for Labour, while their vote share did increase from 35% from 2017 to 43.9% tonight, this was only due to the Green Party vote collapse, as their members tactically voted for Labour. What is a warning for Labour,( despite many visits to the Northcote Electorate by Govt Ministers), is that National’s share of the vote was stable, 52% in 2017, tonight 51%. The news media will talk of course of the drop in the National majority , but this is pointless to compare to the General Election as smaller numbers of people vote in by- elections, as all voting numbers are well down on a General Election result.

Doesn’t make any difference where their votes come from & anyway most Green Party voters are hard core Green. Labour can be happy with the increase in their vote.
Ray
/ 9th June 2018Interesting that the Green Party vote just disappeared, maybe going with Labour this time or just plain staying at home.
As they put up an known candidate against tweedledee and tweedledumb it should give them something to think about.
Gezza
/ 9th June 2018Tweedledumb might’ve done better if he actually HAD an MBA.
Ray
/ 9th June 2018I think the Greens could claim that by-Election is a first past the post election so that explains the vote scavenging by Labour, maybe.
Blazer
/ 9th June 2018if thats the best candidate National could find….they have a dearth of…talent.
PDB
/ 9th June 2018Looking at the current mob he’d be parachuted into the deputy PM job if on the other side of the fence.
Traveller
/ 9th June 2018Actually blazer I know the family. They’re a lovely, down to earth, warm and hospitable lot
Dan is a commendable young man
Blazer
/ 10th June 2018Which National members are not in your opinion?
I’m sure they’re all lovely….people.
Trevors_Elbow
/ 10th June 2018And the Blazer boring personal sniping continues…. you need to get out more
Blazer
/ 10th June 2018I keep forgetting Bidois lived near Trav until his selection was assured, and then became a passionate…Nth Shore lad with a rags to riches backstory that people find so…endearing…(apparently.)
Pete George
/ 10th June 2018And still managed to win against someone who had established an electorate profile in the general election.
Doesn’t this suggest a fairly firm National hold on the electorate?
