Trump’s ‘Space Force’ echoes Raygun’s ‘Star Wars’

Donald Trump wants to establish a ‘Space Force’ – I’m not sure who he wants to fight our there. It sounds like a rehashed ‘Star Wars’ proposed by Ronald Reagan during the Cold War.

BBC – Trump space force: US to set up sixth military branch

President Donald Trump has ordered the US military to establish a sixth branch of its armed forces – a “space force”.

The US president said on Monday it would bolster national security and the economy with the creation of jobs.

“It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space,” Mr Trump said at the White House.

He also promised that the US would “return Americans to the Moon” and would eventually send people to Mars.

“I’m hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as the sixth branch of the armed forces,” Mr Trump announced.

Back in 1983 – Reagan’s Star Wars

On March 23, 1983, President Reagan proposed the creation of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), an ambitious project that would construct a space-based anti-missile system. This program was immediately dubbed “Star Wars.”

The SDI was intended to defend the United States from attack from Soviet ICBMs by intercepting the missiles at various phases of their flight.

This system would tip the nuclear balance toward the United States. The Soviets feared that SDI would enable the United States to launch a first-strike against them. Critics pointed to the vast technological uncertainties of the system, in addition to its enormous cost.

Although work was begun on the program, the technology proved to be too complex and much of the research was cancelled by later administrations. The idea of missile defense system would resurface later as the National Missile Defense.

Sounds like Trump is repackaging this as ‘Space Force’. It would need approval from the US Congress.

Weasel words. The media and liberals hate Trumpy’s guts.

I hope this ain’t fake news. That would ruin my day.

Trump already has a space fleet. He is getting the public used to the idea before it’s confirmed. That would also mean confirming Roswell technology has been used.

I very much doubt the US is in a catchup mode

          Wasn’t the moon landing in 1969 ?

          What were you seeing ?

I remember what a chizz it was to discover later that we hadn’t seen it as it happened, although we were led to believe that we had. Televisons were set up all over the school so that the kiddywinks wouldn’t miss any of it.

I actually thought there was an international moratorium on putting weapons in space.. but there is also a ‘UN convention on Narcotic Drugs’ (also often ignored)

Wise people, Asians. They probably know about the rumours regarding the dark side of the moon. They want to check it out first. No sense becoming like the Yanks.

Asia is a continent, not a country.

Asian is a group of nationalities, not a specific one like French or English.

”Asian people or Asiatic people are people who descend from a portion of Asia’s population. A variety of definitions and geographical data are presented by organizations and individuals for classifying the ethnic groups in Asia. Wikipedia”

Seeing you want to be picky and be prattish, so will I, given we don’t know which ethnic groups are working on the Chinese Space Programme.

There isn’t a dark side of the moon, there’s just a far side we can’t see because the near side is tidally locked to earth. The moon still rotates & the far side gets just as much sunlight as the near side. It’s been well studied & well imaged.

The sun has a similar side not seen from the earth. I read an interesting article in Science that explored the theory another planet may possibly be hiding behind the sun because of its orbit, and ours, always being out of sink. Something like that anyway. It had to do with theory of another planet the ancients called Vulcan, if I remember correctly.

No the sun rotates Corks. I dunno where you get that idea from. There isn’t side hidden from the earth. Neither our planet nor the sun are tidally locked like the moon is with earth. I’ve watched sunspots moving – as it rotates – myself thru an ex neighbour’s telescope with a solar filter.

Yes that planet Niburu or whatever it called is a well known hoary old gem.

The article was in New Scientist( not Scientist ) and I probably remember things wrong. Whether the sun rotates or not, I don’t know. Assuming what you say is correct the would mean the orbits of earth and planet X would never be aligned and therefore invisible to us unless we can pick up gravity anomalies suggesting a huge mass.

I do remember correctly the planet was Vulcan and not Niburu. Unless they are the same with a different name.

I make no claim of being even a lay expert on the heavens.

Vulcan was Le Vierrier’s theorised planet inside the orbit of Mercury. Einstein’s theory of relativity largly explained the observations that led him to suggest it existed. It’s been searched for but nothing like it has been found – according to Wikipedia. You might be thinking of Planet X that might lurk in the Kuiper Belt.

‘Planet X’ (aka Nibiru) that is supposedly on a long eliptical orbit, outside the plane of the ecliptic.. (home of the gods ?) but again could be more ‘bedtime/fairy stories’ 😀

”Astronomers have suggested installing a large radio telescope on the far side, where the Moon would shield it from possible radio interference from Earth.”

That is why I consider the Hubble Telescope and Space Station a false economy. The Moon has much to offer observation wise. Why America hasn’t made use of this advantage is beyond me. Having heard a NASA scientist interviewed ( Paul Henry talkback) who stated America has the technology makes things even more bizarre.

Yes, I’m sure they can. And I’m sure there are many that can see the advantages of a great many possibilities for different types of observation platforms & probes n stuff. And if they all want to reach into their own pockets & pay for it I don’t think there’s anyone stopping them. I think it probably would cost a bit more than the Winter Energy Payment though.

How will you signal it and get info back? You’d have to put up a satellite network around the moon to do it which would surely get into some pretty tricky gravitational problems given the earth’s influence.

You would have to put one or more relay lunar satellites up for that purpose. The Chines are doing that for their far side lander. The logistics of maintaing a system like this, which has to include soft landing technology on top of observational tech & capacity are probably why it hasn’t been done. Just plonking a sophisticated observational platform at a Le Grange point is expensive enough.

Reagan broke the USSR economically by luring them into a technology race in the Military space…. Star Wars was just the high visibility outlier of that strategy.

Trump is positioning a trap for the Chinese to cripple them economically… couple an arms race with restricting Chinese access to the biggest and richest market on the planet i.e. the USA and you have a recipe for a cold war fought mostly at the economic and technology level…
