I posted this one last week but it got no love. Definitely worth a listen if you can handle a slice of pop that’s both dreamy and melancholic. It’s currently in the charts, a duet by two young rising stars.

I’ve kept on encouraging my muso mate to finish fiddling with that song video I want you to see, snowy. He’s been busy with other things & he’s having inexplicable technical problems uploading to YouTube, but he put his latest draft on Vimeo as a test for me to see & I reckon it’s done. I’ve asked him if I can post the link to that for you. Just waiting to hear back.

Susan Taylor of the Pozo-Seco Singers in the 60s turned into Taylor Pie all the years later.

It just got so dark the pooks have finished their evening lawn salad, flown up onto the fence, and then flapped down to the other side.

I’ve been biting my nails as a suddenly-abandoned Jojo found herself alone on the lawn & was running up & down the fenceline, chirping piteously, seemingly forgetting she can just fly up there too now.

I watched her fly up onto the gate from the stream side a couple of hours ago, after she’d been running up & down the fenceline calling for the whanau again, as soon as they hopped over the fence & into the yard.

It wasn’t pretty. All wildly flapping little black wings & long orange toes grabbing hold of the gate-top & hanging on like grim death because she’d misjudged how much lift she needed. Then when she hauled herself upright, it was all wobbles & wildly flapping wings again as she tried to keep her balance.

She’s been able to fly up & down again since yesterday, but I don’t think she knows yet how she does it. It’s like she thinks it’s magic. That one second she’s standing on the ground, wishing she was up there, & the next second she’s up on the fence – but she’s got no idea how it happened! A similar sort of thing seems to happen when she flaps down.

Anyway, in the rapidly fading light, she eventually flew up to the fence top, perfectly this time. But then stood there for several minutes, seemingly at a loss about how to get down again. Then … yipee … she took to the air & flew out over the stream in a big curve, & headed up the stream, under the bridge. I’m wondering if that’s actually her first proper flight.

Big bruv Pickles was so different. As soon as he made his first flight over the fence, he knew he was onto something big! From that first day he was immediately flying up into all sorts of places just for the hell of it. Up into trees. Along the lawn, launching off the trellises. Up onto the shed roof, up onto the patio roof, the house roof.

Ya worry about these pooks kids, as a pooky koro, ya know?

Awwww poor Jojo just hasn’t got the mojo for flying yet.
BB Pickles will be the role model from Gezza stream no-doubt.

I’d be happier if he didn’t teach her how to pull up grass & dig holes in my lawn, sis. God it’s hard to stop them. The adults learned quickly, but this pair of little monkeys are forever getting into mischief as soon as stop watching them & they see I’ve gone. They both got the water pistol tonite! I can’t spend all my time spying on them & running out there doing my block!

God they’re determined little beggars. And talk about strong! Pickles is still picking up the little empty clay pot from against the house & moving it onto & around the lawn. And that’s pretty heavy for a bird. Even when I wedge it in place against the house with a bit of cut paving stone, he manoeuvres that out of the way and: ‘Voila! Pot playtime!’

And Jojo pulls out flower stakes & plays with those. I subsequently find them all over the place everytime I put them back.

Try putting some stones into it !

I could well imagine that for some small birds, flying would be totally unnerving at first.
Some pooks never seem to get past the clumsy stage, others, like one down the road, do it neatly and accurately. He even tucks his feet up out of the way.

A real headline read ‘General Eisenhower Flies Back To Front.’

He would just tip it over & scrape the stones out. I had a double thickness shopping bag of stones I’d collected up to use for drainage not far from that pot. THAT was heavy. Around midday today I found it had been shredded open, half the stones tipped out, and the shredded bag still containing the other half had been dragged onto the lawn. Had to pick them all up as they’ll stuff the handmower blades.

Probably Pickles, or the pair of them. And then they just bloody stand there, looking like butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths, asking if there’s any extra wheat for a treat! While the parents just stand there too, & pretend they didn’t notice it happening, & that there’s nothing they can do about it!

Unbagged & inside one of the heavy clay pots probably the best option.

I had a very late night so I had a nice relaxing nap around 1pm. I got woken up by a banging noise so loud I thought it must be coming from the digger at a nearby building site. I got up to have a peak & it was Jojo, standing on the little ramp outside my lounge slider, Banging on the screen door with her beak to see if I would come out. 😀

No. That would just pique his interest & he’d try to figure out what was making it. Best bet is just to pooklet-proof the yard. Put stuff of interest to them beyond their view or reach.

I just had to go & find out why Jojo was incessantly wailing in the darkness. She was over on my side of the bank wandering through the foliage, crying. So I talked to her sympthetically for a while & she calmed down a bit. It’s bitterly cold outside already, icy air.

She’s possibly just been told over the last few days she’s big enuf now to make her own sleeping spot & been given the push – isn’t happy about it.

Eventually one of the other pooks came over to her. I couldn’t make out who it was in the gloom. Maybe Sweety. So I left them to work it out. Anyway, hopefully, if that’s what the problem was, she’ll get to snuggle in to mum or dad tonite. It’s all quiet now.

Is anyone interested in tickets to be in the audience for The Project, which they are currently offering ?

    I thought not.

I don’t even know who that is 😀

I have seen TP twice, and found it very teejus indeed…like being in a room with strangers who are all yakking and laughing while you stand trying not to look bored.

So I shouldn’t send for an extra ticket for you ?
