I listened to part of an interview (RNZ Kim Hill) with outgoing Govt. science advisor; P Gluckman
He mentioned; Meth testing, GMOs, Climate change, Fluoride(water).. he said whilst his job is to give scientific advice, the PM (& Govt.) they ultimately decide if it will determine their policies/agenda
He also mentioned that there are differing opinions (from experts) on these issues ranging from deniers to alarmists & all those between. He even mentioned the ‘conspiracy theorists’ driving ‘other agendas’

I saw on Newshub/Nation; interview with the incoming one (a lady.. name ?), said she will be travelling the country & talking to other scientists on issues; she also said the ultimate decisions on policy, were in hands of MPs.. whether to take their advice or ignore it, if it does not fit their agenda :/
