France, Belgium win world cup quarter finals

It probably wasn’t a surprise to see France beat Uruguay in a Football World Cup quarter final this morning, but it would have shocked many, especially in South America, when Belgium edged out cup favourites Brazil. Belgium led 2-0 until late in the game, and Brazil could only close up with one goal.

France has eliminated both Argentina and Uruguay, and with Brazil out too now there are no South American teams left in the running.

Tomorrow morning (NZ time) the other two quarter finals will be played:

  • Russia versus Croatia
  • Sweden versus England

Despite Germany crashing out early, and also Italy, Spain and Portugal, Europe is dominating this world cup.

My (very) optimistic call on this… Belgium v England final. #itscominghome

(told you all I had gone native) 😀

Seriously though, I am wondering whether I should head down the road and offer condolences to the Brazilian neighbours….

England have there hands full Missy… Croatia are likely semi opponents if they can beat Sweden… and Sweden have been a bogey team for ENgalnd for sometime… remember the famous Swedes 1, Turnips 0 headline…..

Would love Belgium to tip over the French…. can’t stand the French footie team

Oh please, don’t bring rationality and reason into this… 😉

The England team appear to have more confidence in themselves than some previous teams, and Southgate appears to have fostered a great team atmosphere that some have been saying was missing in previous tournaments.

To be honest I don’t know too much about football, but it is hard to not get caught up in the optimistic atmosphere here in the UK, and the feeling this could be the year that they finally win the World Cup again. Already one demon for England has been exorcised with the win by penalties over Colombia, so the nation feel like anything is possible now. And in this world cup who knows.

Belgium will have to shut down Mbappe, will be a great game whichever way it goes.

I don’t fancy Englands chances if we start bringing Brexit illusions in, the English team will end up fighting amongst themselves.

The winner will be from the harder side of the draw – so either France or Belgium for me – I can see the semi-final clash between the two going to penalties so too tough to call. Would be good to see Belgium win the cup though.

Personally I think (with my rational side) is that if Belgium beat France then they will most likely win the WC, but England a playing a pretty good game against Sweden at the moment.
