Still getting visits from Aspen most days, & Jojo also popped in this morning. Sweety visted late this evening. I’ve cut back on the feeding and daily interactions to save my lawn from young Pickles’ & Jojo’s ravages, & the pooks are consequently spending much more time back in & around the stream, where they should be.

Been great to have been able to watch & film the Pukekos raise their babies from their first days, & growing up to the point where they are able to fly, but the two youngsters have been quite destructive & are only just now quitting pulling out grass to eat the roots, & digging big holes in my lawn.

Was entranced by a young starling picking around the lawn outside my kitchen, among the sparrows, today. Colours iridescing in the sunlight. It’s been a lovely day at Pookden Manor.

I still get one, solitary, waxeye flitting in to perch briefly in one of the spaces in the trellis outside my kitchen, Kitty, to see what the sparrows assembling on it waiting for a spell of window ledge dining are doing. Pretty little birds, waxeyes.

    • Aren’t they pretty ? Their colouring is very soft and subtle. They seem very gentle as a rule, politely waiting their turn at the fruit if there’s a crowd. They like bananas as well as citrus fruit and sweet apples. I have too many to count, which I find delightful.

Having one actually in the palm of my hand was a marvellous experience as she sat there sweetly and trustingly.

I would have loved a video of the two lowflyers coming in the front door and colliding with the dog. The sight of all three flying up in the air before turning tail and fleeing was a terribly funny one.

Bananas! Thank you! The only fruit I had today was in little sealed punnets of fruit salad in fruit juice & I decided it would be too much of a sticky mess & a potential waste to open one & toss some chunks out the window to the five waxeyes who spent a short time in my lemon tree today. But I have plenty of bananas & slicing a few little rounds off those will be perfect to try next time.
