One of the criticisms of Donald Trump’s meeting in Singapore with Kim Yong Un was that Trump was legitimising Kim and giving him significant international exposure and credibility.
The same is being said of the Trump-Putin meeting.
How Russia’s relationship with the rest of the world will be affected by the meeting.
But there is pressure on Trump to confront Putin:
Somehow I don’t think this is likely.
Trump is more likely to come away from the meeting saying that it was a great meeting, he got on very well with Putin and they would work well together in the future somewhat more embellished probably).

/ 16th July 2018Duncan Garner asked the question I put to Lurchy a couple of days ago but received no reply.
If these two are in a room alone, how will they understand each other? Does Putin speak English? I doubt Trumpy speaks Russian.
If they can’t understand each other they will need an interpreter (s). Does this mean once the meeting terminates the interpreter will have an unfortunate car crash?

/ 16th July 2018Problem solved…although what I saw was Putin speaking halting English. For a meeting like this your thoughts and points need to be expressed with absolute clarity; and understood with absolute certainty.
I loved seeing Putins walk to power again. Down historic corridors, red carpets and adoring Russians. That was a show to rival English pomp and ceremony.

/ 16th July 2018Its Trump
He says shite live on TV one day and denies it the next .
The only certainty is Trump is full of it.
Corky
/ 16th July 2018That’s most unkind of you, Giffy. He may be full of it….but he rules the world and the media. He manipulates like no politician I have seen who isn’t a dictator.
His boorishness is his misdirection that everyone follows like flies to horseshit.
However, rest easy. Something is bound to go wrong. Then all the lemmings can come out from under their rocks and say ” told you so.”

/ 16th July 2018I understood from a previous report that both sides will have an interpreter.

/ 16th July 2018Putin is like Trump…he understands English but has trouble making sense when he ..talks it.
Gezza
/ 16th July 2018That’s because he THINKS in Russian. It takes quite a while when you learn a language well before you suddenly realise you just thought in it.

/ 16th July 2018ex-KGB boss Putin reportedly speaks 5 languages; inc. English & German.. besides Russian !
Mr Kim & Angie Merkle also reportedly speak English too

/ 16th July 2018English has become a defacto ‘Intl language’.. which is great for us who speak it.
BUT; lookout I hear Mandarin is catching up.. quickly !
turn to ch28-29 freeview…

/ 16th July 2018English has become de facto the lingua franca of the world.
It would be inconceivable that Putin would not know English ! Someone in his position will almost certainly be multi;lingual. But he may well be one of these who reads it and understands it better than he speaks it. I can read & understand languages in which I would not now be able to hold much of a conversation.
The interpreter will be there to make sure that there are no misunderstandings.

Monolinguists all. who can’t stand anyone who knows more than they do.

/ 16th July 2018Always the argument when you have nothing is you give them legitimacy by meeting them, bloody ridiculous thing to say about Russia or North Korea who are both nuclear armed countries…they are already taken pretty damn seriously already why would sitting down with them hurt.
Joe Bloggs
/ 16th July 2018Seems a pretty convincing reason to not sit down with Putin

It’s not as if he hasn’t done this before.

/ 16th July 2018A New Zealand commentator on the reaction to Donald Trump in Britain says, “No, you don’t have to like him, but the level of hysteria and abject dishonesty looks embarrassing and desperate.”
Some commentators overseas also are on about the abject dishonesty around the President.

Kitty Catkin
/ 16th July 2018What I cannot understand is how he will say something on camera and call it fake news when it’s quoted…even though he is there on video and the words are unequivocal.
He must have annoyed people when he made patronisingly approving remarks about the Queen who probably doesn’t give a damn what he thinks and won’t be flattered by his approval. No wonder he was out of there after less than 20 minutes.
