German football pride: Mesut Özil ‏ versus Reinhard Grindel

Mesut Özil is a German professional footballer who plays for English club Arsenal.  Hewasin the disappointing German team that failed in the recent World Cup in Russia. He was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Reinhard Grindel (born in Hamburg) is a German journalist, politician (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) and football administrator.

From 2002 to 2016 Grindel was member of the Bundestag (Lower Chamber of the German Parliament). On 15 April 2016 he was elected president of the German Football Association (DFB) and resigned as member of parliament.

    It’s an interesting story – at the time the photo was taken he was attacked by politicians from both extremes of the political divide in Germany so it hasn’t been a simple case of being targeted by one particular political group within Germany.

    Is he German? Of course he is but he has always had his detractors in Germany simply due to the fact he doesn’t ‘look German’. Even when Germany won the world cup in 2014 he was shunned by many in his homeland and his performances criticised more than others in the team. As Arsenal have found he can often go missing in the big games & his on-field body language is sometimes poor & and this also enables the haters by giving them further ammunition to attack him.
