One of the weirdest stories this week was that Emmanuel Macron denied that his former bodyguard was his lover and had the nuclear codes.

For those unaware of the story, a video was taken of a man dressed in police riot gear beating a protestor during the May Day protests this year. The man in question turned out to be Macron’s personal bodyguard, Alexandre Benalla.

After the protests the incident was hushed up and CCTV footage conveniently disappeared, this allowed Benalla to continue working as Macron’s bodyguard. Everything looked fine for the French President and his bodyguard until about 8 or 9 days ago when mobile phone footage of the incident emerged, and Benalla was sacked – he has since been charged by the police, coinciding with a significant drop in public support for Macron.

Meanwhile in France questions started to emerge about the President’s relationship with his bodyguard, and the closeness of their friendship. Macron previously had to deny he was gay after rumours came out that the media had compromising pictures of him with a former chairman of Radio France. It is in the midst of these rumours that Macron denied Benalla was his lover, and that he had given Benalla the Nuclear codes, in a crisis meeting with MPs.
