Don’t normally watch the programme but watched Cold Case and saw the Peters interview that followed.

Peters was flip-flopping & stuttering all over the place. When it was pointed out that immigration had only dropped a few thousand and was still at record highs all Peters could come up with was that it currently wasn’t at an ‘individual’ record-high. Compromising with the likes of the Greens was the excuse for abandoning all of his major election promises including massive drops in immigration & removing the Maori seats.

What he should have been asked was why he had instead asked for and received billions of $ for fighting a cold war with the Chinese in the Pacific considering he hadn’t campaigned on that issue and the issue hardly seems to be something his voting base would have been interested in backing.

Not sure what his defense was of promising to end the “failed economic experiment” of “neo-liberal policy” considering he is supposed to be the most right-wing govt partner so therefore should be able to make major changes in this area if he wanted to go far-left economically.

Be fair. When Corrin Dann pressed him & said what happened to his saying they wanted to drop immigration to 10,000, he said, up front “Well, we lost that argument” & then spoke of having to make compromises in a genuine coalition government.

The only thing stopping him getting his way on immigration (considering he held all the cards post-election) was…..reality.

It’s your reporting I’m criticising. I also don’t recall Peters being told immigration was still at record highs. His point was it’s lower than that the 73,000 (was it?) than it got up to under National, a vague statement about how that was cause they had tightened up on the skill requirements.

As to whether they got to anything like near the 30,000 Andrew Little had identified as his target, of course they haven’t. Which is not surprising because he’s so bloody dim & they’ve done no work on it.

“I also don’t recall Peters being told immigration was still at record highs.”

Winston clearly said the 65000 was better than the record high & claiming this as some sort of ‘win’, Dann was clearly unimpressed with this explanation having made the point that immigration was still running at “65,000 net” and the drop had only been “a tiny little bit” from that record high.
The suggestion being 65,000 was still very high.

Winston also not too good with numbers as he claimed a drop of “8000 for starters” but 72000 to 65000 last time I looked was 7000.

That’s the record high. Anything below that can’t be a record high. Stop embarrassing yourself.

I screwed that up in my rush to respond before you ran off to take cover. I’ll say it again, properly.

His point was it’s lower than the 73,000 (was it?) that it got up to under National, and he made a vague statement about how the reduction of five thousand under his government was because they had tightened up on the skill requirements.

As to whether they got to anything like near the 30,000 Andrew Little had identified as his target, of course they haven’t. Which is not surprising because he’s so bloody dim & they hadn’t done any actual detailed work on it. As usual.
