Tracey Watkins is fond of Ardern, might be sister/maternal thing who knows but its badly effecting her writing.

“Ministers are frustrated that they feel they’ve got a good story to tell about business-friendly measures like the Provincial Growth Fund and R&D tax credits, while the Government’s infrastructure programme and KiwiBuild will provide a fiscal kick to the economy.”

Jones,s slush fund and the R and D credits are of no interest to 99% of businesses, one is seen as a NZ First re election pork and the latter is daftly complicated and their taxes are funding it. All the infrastructure and state house building are National projects, as a business person you look at Twyford and ask what the hell has he been doing for the last 6 years, clearly not planning.

    Also from Watkins.

“There are other ministers in the wings who can step up: Energy Minister Megan Wood had to pick up the pieces of the backlash to the oil and gas decision and has quietly implemented the lessons learned with a more consultative approach to subsequent decisions in her portfolio.”

Like setting up the quake insurance tribunal without consulting anyone and now it will either have to be totally re worked. Probably one of the most arrogant people in her cabinet and I would guess one of the first to go.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/105982965/amazon-warns-on-internet-shopping-tax-change-but-government-signals-no-uturn

I can see this becoming an issue for the government, they should wait and see what happens in Australia. In some ways its like Trump slapping tarriffs on as its really just a tax on NZ consumers and protecting a couple of dozen huge retailers who take advantage of lack of competition here and ramp up prices. Its not the small mom and pop business this helps, there arent that many of them in the area where ecommerce thrives.
In NZ we dont get a lot of choice and if Amazon et al decide its too hard then every consumer in NZ will suffer. Also I dont see why Amazon should pay taxes here, their staff dont use our hospitals, schools, coppers or need our defence force so aside from local couriers who do pay tax Amazon shouldnt have to pay NZ taxes.

If Amazon sees it as unenforceable and unworkable why the public comment.
Surely prudent use of that information would be to put it in the bottom draw for use later.

Not really, best point out to the government that their plan wont work for this this and this reason so perhaps re think it or go ahead as a soveriegn entity but we wont be doing business here, neither will others and its your citizens who get lack of choice and will continue to pay over the odds for a limited choice.
Its a miniscule amount of revenue being raised for what could be very unpopular policy.

        • I find that Amazon’s charges often negate any savings,or they did so it’s not an issue for me. As I remember it, there were charges other than postage and they even charged for each item as well as the usual p & h.

There are good online sites here, like BuyInvite whose discounts are excellent.

Beach reserves allow a 20 meter strip between the medium high tide mark and the adjoining inland property. This strip is defined on the inland side but fluid on the sea side. As erosion eats into the seaward side and the mean high tide mark slowly eats away the 20 meter strip the reserve is lost. Reading about this it seams that the only remedy would be to take more land off the inward landowner using the public works act. I don’t know if this act can be used for this. Dose anyone know? Thinking seawater rises global warming etc.

Suerly that would be in Act of God territory ?

      Reply
      • I hadn’t thought of that. It wouldn’t happen often, I hope, and most houses would be more that 20 metres from the sea….

If someone builds very close to the sea, they may be expected to take into account that erosion happens naturally.

    Taking care of biz….

‘Perfluorooctanesulfonic and perfluorooctanoic acid simply sound dangerous. Indeed, these chemicals can cause myriad health problems–and for years, 3M built a $120 billion empire on products that used them, from water-repelling clothes to Teflon-coated non-stick pans. Now, the Intercept has uncovered evidence that 3M knew about the dangers of these chemicals–and kept using them to design household objects anyway. The reason why it stayed on shelves is a shocking glimpse at an ethical breakdown at a major corporation. Read more here.

Yah can ingest the bits that flake off but the will be excreted unchanged.
The chemicals in their raw state are suspected carcinogens. The same classification that was given to TCCD in Agrnt Orange.
After 40 years of research that eventually was proven to be incorrect.

      • That’s an old story, I think, about the non-stick frying pans. We have all had them and not all died as a result.

I wouldn’t keep using one that was flaking, anyway,

The PDTs are out in force today, downticking the most innocuous remarks that I make. They uptick one person for saying something and downtick me for agreeing.

Maybe the person who opens General Debate on a nearby rightwing blog is a union member working to rule or just cannot be bothered opening the rightwing hate feast,PG opens and is always ready to go every day, unlike the SLACK right.

Poll trending down as the minority who stopped it double down trying to influence perceptions?

Here’s a prediction: David Farrar will show no interest in the “powerful interests” who prevented Southern and Molyneaux from using the Powerhouse.

In Australia it is Scanlon Foundation which pushes for more immigration (Scanlon is a billionaire property developer).

    Here we have

CORIN You don’t want immigration to fall, though, do you? I just want to say something. I saw you in a speech after the Budget, and you were speaking to a big room of businesspeople – some of the biggest business minds in the country – and you stood up and you said, “Don’t worry about Treasury’s figure or estimation that it will go back to the trend of 12,000.” You were confident it was going to be a lot higher than that.

      • I saw some of the 3 interview, if it could be called that. It was basically a monologue by Molyneux, and a boring one at that; he went on and on, if Patrick Gower tried to get a word in, Molyneux held a hand out and said ‘Let me finish….’ He is an expert straw man maker, and a surprising bore. His fans don’t seem to have missed much.

I don’t believe that there was a great conspiracy going on to stop them.

        Define racist
        Stefan Molyneux

Although it’s most likely his current self-marketing strategy. He now has a long history. I just stumbled across this, & the very comprehensive website linked below. A lot of links inside other articles on that site seem worth a read too.

“What are the criticisms of Stefan Molyneux?

There is just so much to tell that I don’t really know where to start. The very worst of it is that he has always encouraged people — especially young people — to abandon their families of origin if said family was “abusive”. Sounds good until you realize that Stefan defines abuse as not agreeing with every single point Stefan makes.

Unlike most other cults, Stefan doesn’t the provide a physical home and community for the people he’s brainwashed. Instead, he has people cut ties to families who could offer financial and physical help and support.

That’s probably the worst of it. Other than that, he is the kind of guy who clearly will say anything for donations. He has shifted from anarcho-libertarianism / anarcho-capitalism to far right / alt-right stuff. He used to rail against the evils of the state. Now he rails against the evil of the non-white races, immigrants, feminists, etc.

He made this jump from libertarian apologist to Trump-supporting race realist without batting an eye. He has gone from anarchist to fascist authoritarian all the while claiming that he is morally consistent and ALWAYS RIGHT about everything.

Despite his claims about being a philosopher, he is in the end an textbook narcissist and failed actor who has managed to use YouTube to get an audience. Initially he used the fringe anarchist movement to entertain and from which to get donations. His natural inclinations and realization that anarchists don’t have as much money as Republicans has led him to swap out anarchists for Trump supporters.

But don’t take my word for it. Watch some of his earlier stuff. Watch him now. Read about the way he’s lied about his childhood, about the real nature of his IT “career”, about deFOOing, about his wife’s career and reprimand. You’ll see that he really is little more than an opportunistic actor.”

Mayor of Durham (NC) bans Jordan Peterson

Mayor Pro Tempore Jillian Johnson issued a statement on behalf of the mayor and the full city council ahead of Mr. Peterson’s scheduled Sept. 10 show at the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC), excoriating him for espousing “racist, misogynistic and transphobic views.”

“We wish to emphasize that a person’s right to free speech does not include the right to a platform or an audience,” the officials said in the June 6 statement. “As many in our community have been disturbed and angered by Mr. Peterson’s racist, misogynist, and transphobic views, we would like to use this opportunity to reiterate our commitments and values to all of you as your elected representatives.

Ms. Johnson is a Black Lives Matter activist who is reluctant to identify with any political party.

“We believe that Durham is a place for all of us — black, white, Asian, Latinx, indigenous, and mixed-race, trans and cis, gay and lesbian, queer, and straight, disabled and able-bodied, young and elderly, women, men, and non-binary, native and immigrant, secular and people of faith,” the statement read. “Those who seek to exclude or deny the humanity of others will find no comfort here.”

    https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jul/9/jordan-b-peterson-blasts-durham-city-council-autho/

His lengthy response addresses each paragraph of the council’s statement. At one point he calls part of it “a conceptually brutal mishmash of self-righteousness, indignation and utter moral and political confusion.”

“Everything that is reprehensible about the radical and ideologically-possessed left – all the moral self-righteousness, the platitudes, the clichés, the mindless celebration of diversity for the sake of the demonstration of tolerance, the naivete, and the appalling malevolence of casual denunciation – is on painful display in this missive,” Peterson wrote. “Exposure to such a piece of writing left me with a strong desire for a hot shower accompanied by plenty of soap and a scrub brush.”
