Collins unrepentant over fake news link

The dangers to politicians of being active in social media were highlighted again today when Judith Collins used an online ‘news’ article to demand a response from Jacinda Ardern.

This is known to be a conspiracy web site, and this was pointed out to Collins along with the real legal situation in France.

Stuff:  Judith Collins defends linking to fake news article on France consent laws

Senior National MP Judith Collins is standing by a tweet linking to a an article that made false claims about France’sage of consent laws.

France had already made sex with any children younger than 15 an offence, but it did not automatically classify all such sex as rape – neither does New Zealand.

The new law makes it far easier for prosecutors to do so by introducing a new offence of “abuse of vulnerability”. Critics have argued that the new law does not go far enough, but not that the law goes backward.

Collins responded to those on Twitter who asked why she was tweeting out fake news by tweeting to reputable news sources covering the same topic, but in a deeply different way.

She told Stuff she didn’t necessarily “agree” with every article she tweeted but wanted to draw attention to the issue.

“I’m just concerned about the story about France itself,” Collins said.

Collins said she didn’t buy into “conspiracies” about liberals pushing paedophilia worldwide, despite sharing the article which suggested liberals were doing just that in its first paragraph.

And:

It would have been embarrassing, but admitting a mistake and apologising would have been better than digging deeper into the world of real fake news and conspiracy mongering.

Yes. Wonder if that one will keep turning up in Question Time for a wee while, before going into the A4 envelope marked “Judith Collins”, for later use as well.

Well, hardly. I’ve got tools & equipment & done DIY jobs on things which have gone wrong which have ended up getting that label. But generally not within earshot of others because its such an offensive term. When its applied to men or women in a derogatory sense its got a deeply sexually offensive meaning and only really obnoxious people use it that way.

Er, Kitty. That doesn’t worry me. That’s just Blazer being typically obnoxious, trying to be as hurtful as possible.

Now that is going to offend the fuck out of a lot of people’

‘PG just deleted the illustrative context I just posted because it would be too offensive to you & him & others.’

As you well know, I was illustrating the point that you claimed such terms are not offensive when frequently used because people become desentised to them – but the context in which they are used is very significant to whether they are offensive. But I’ll leave it here because you’ve adequately made my point & anything else you hsve to say on the matter will only be you trying to be even more obnoxious. It’s just how you are.

            • It worried me and it should worry Blazer that he can sink to such depths.

          • It is offensive when it’s used of a person and not the part of the anatomy. If it’s used of a woman, it reduces her to that part of her, if it’s used of a man, it’s as bad in a different way. It also insults the body part to use it as a derogatory term.

I read a James Bond book in which the villains kept referring to a woman as a ‘slot’. This was offensive out of all proportion, somehow, because it seemed so derogatory. It was almost worse than cunt, it was so contemptuous.

            Can a prude vacillate ?

I wonder if Jude was doing a pressure test on Simon to see what sort of gas he released when media assailed him. Now that’s what you call a conspiracy theory.

I think Collins misstep can be put to bed with a possible crisis for Labour blowing up in the next month.

    for those that understand…

‘People will do anything for money. Even go to war. Mercenaries have been fighting in wars for all of recorded history. They do the military’s dirty work and are paid a huge paycheck for doing it. Mercenaries do more than you think. Today they are called security contractors…

They were Cheneys’ & Rumsfelds’ way of corporatising the illegal invasion of Iraq which among other things meant fewer US soldiers coming home in bodybags. Aljazeera rescreened a documentary on the big firms involved in this work. They were busted now hiring former child soldiers from Africa because they were the cheapest. These are young men who have hacked off hands and arms under the direction of the rebel commander who captured them. Most of these young men are seriously screwed up still. There was also some footage of the white security contractors, Brits &Yanks, abusing the locals because they could – they had all the firepower. They posted their own footage. They weren’t subject to even such little military discipline as US soldiers were.

Most of them I would call mercenaries. They were doing the jobs that would normally be done by occupation forces & military police in an occupied country.
