It’s a beautiful day in North Welly. And this morning at 11 am I got treated to this young fellow gloriously celebrating it in song. I didn’t want to dash inside for a good camera in case he flew off so I just walked up really close and videoed him for about 4 minutes with my trusty favourite Samsung 3G only 2mp 2x zoom mobile cellcam. Then, when I went to stop & save the video, it said “Nothing recorded!” 😡 Argghhh!

The bloody thing. It does this every now and then – just throws a wobbly and needs a mobile shutdown and reboot, which takes a little while. 🙄

Then I remembered I had another, just-recharged Sony 3G 2mp 2x zoom mobile in my other pocket and it was ready to go. luckily the happy wee lad just carried on performing for me. His colours when he was in the sunlight earlier on are stunning.

I have seen an occasional tui here recently, but not in the numbers that they are sometimes seen in. It’s a lovely surprise when one sees that little white collar and the bands. They come into this garden from time to time. Someone was singing beautifully this afternoon, and then stopped and began again much less melodiously. ‘Who hit the bum note ?’ as the saying is.

The ungrateful wood pigeons have buggered off now that the berries they like are over.

One good thing is that the fence next to the bird table (and the table) no longer need to be scrubbed every day because the birds stuff themselves and then poo the berries out again when they have their breakfast.

Yes, on the first video I thought I was taking of young Tuku there, he was being very melodious, singing out with a number gorgeous whistling & bell-like tunes & peals, which is why I videoed him for so long. When I had to take the 2nd clip he was being more chirpy-chatty & wolf-whistly.

New to Pookden Manor, the very pretty young Ludmilla is proving to be something of a difficult customer, as mallard hens go. Not content with waiting patiently on the stream bank for her wheat brunch or dinner, she has for two days running hopped the fence & strutted around the lawn, loudly quacking & demanding service at any time of HER choosing.

When I go outside, she comes right up to me and taps the ground impatiently, frequently looking up to see why her order is taking so long! Bold as brass, the little madam had no hesitation in hoovering up wheat from my hand the first time it was offered. However, when feed time is over & I come inside she struts about complaining loudly about the small portion-size of her meal !

Twice, when she did this today, 2 of the 3 adult pooks were minding their own business trimming my back lawn. They of course came up wanting some too, but they won’t eat from my hand, & Jojo stays well back (she still has the pip about getting chased off for digging holes in my lawn) – so they each get a sprinkle of grains thrown down near them.

What was funny was watching ludmilla strutting about afterwards, quacking her head off. The two adult pooks both times just looked at her like she was a mad woman, & then went back to their lawn clipping.

But not wee Jojo. She eventually just gets sick of it & runs straight at her ! And it works – Ludmilla does a “😮 Quark !” & flies straight up & over the fence down to the stream. 😀
