    Gezza’s Stream: Morning Wildlife Report

    1. The Dawn Chorus commenced this morning at approximately 4.45 am.
The opening solo act was one of these vocalists, who used to confuse the Pooken Manor audience into thinking it was the whole choir:

    2. Ludmilla Mallard, not content with the portion size of breakfast cereal, suddenly flew up INSIDE the open kitchen window, banging her head on the pane, & down onto the lawn below again. 😮 The incident was regrettably not captured on video, but is regarded as a dangerous aerial manoeuvre & hopefully, for Ludmilla’s sake, will not be repreated!

    That is all.
    Thank you.

I can’t be 100% sure that it was a thrush & not a Mrs Blackbird who walked jauntily in through the front door one Christmas morning, but it probably was, I saw a bird prancing in, grinning like a horsecollar, and then covered with confusion like a person who’s walked into a stranger’s house by mistake and hurrying out again.

It is COLD today. Cold !

Righto. I’ve just ordered a pair of chest-high waders to facilitate clearing my stream of plastic & rubbish on a more regular, less getting soaked, basis – with at least some first line eel-protection – because, apart from Eli, there’s a big mutha 4+-footer that cruises up it sometimes.

Nobody tell ma. Even when I tell her I only go into clear water no deeper than an inch below the top of my calf-high gumboots & I always have a 3-pronged hoe or a rake for balance she’s convinced I’ll be swept away.

Is there a Celia to keep Eli company ?

      4 feet ! That’s a colosseel.

Bloody cold still, I can’t believe it after the warm weather we’ve been having. I had a thin, lacy jersey on yesterday and I was hot in it. When I turned the heater on, it made that burning dust smell for a few seconds.

I should be out weedeating, but I’m not.

At that length she’ll definitely be a female, Kitty. Males don’t get that big.

        Celia she is. 👍🏼 😀

        👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼

I bought a torpedo hoe years ago in a second hand shop, What an investment it was, $8 well spent. It’s been used so much that you can see where the hands of its users go, they have worn the wood away a little bit.

Brrr. Just spent 45 minutes out at the stream with Eli. Threw some defrosted stir fry beef in and he powered on up the rapids ok. But well before he could get anywhere near any of the chunks the 2 mallard Burgle Boys saw me and raced downstream, swam around up-ending, and got every one!

Poor Eli was looking everywhere for a bite to eat and it had all gone. His olfactory sweeps were useless. In the end I came inside and microed a few more for him – but this time I went down to my Eel Spot & the Burgle Boys retreated downstream, so I could make sure Eli had a clean run at the food.

The stream’s flowing quite fast so meat thrown in front of him sometimes ended up dropping to the bed behind him. And when it landed the current would roll it along until it got stuck in rocks. He’s not the best at this hunting by smell lark. I’m going to have train him. He missed a lot of meat. A slightly smaller juvenile eel appeared from upstream and got one of the chunks in the sandy shallows I was trying to direct him to.

The deep bit, on my side of the bank, is deeper than before now. But when he did circle over and go deep, he kept cruising DOWNSTREAM and not turning and coming back UP in the deep channel. So he only got one bit. It’s bloody cold – I think it’s turned Southerly and the sun’s gone down that far down the in the stream. I left him to it. I don’t think the strong current today is helping.

One of the Burgle Boys & Ivan are now below the kitchen window. There’s a largely silent battle going on between them and Sweety and Aspen, chasing each other around, wings flapping, mallards snorting, and stuff. I’m not a bloody referee. They can sort that one out themselves. They shouldn’t even be here. It’s getting dark – the automatic security lights have come on across the stream – time for sleeps, and they’ve all been told that! They’re just not listening. >:D

Re: torpedo hoe. Yes. One of my first garden tool purchases. Very handy implement. Mine gets a lot of use as well.

I like the way that it can be used two ways; with the blade or turned sideways.
