The cuckoo was back this morning, large as life and twice as natural.

The other birds are stuffing themselves with the waxeyes’ Granny Smith apples. Greedy pigs. You should see the blackbirds shovelling them down.

Ivan not only flies up from below the kitchen window several times a day now, Bluey is now doing it and so is Sweety. Yesterday Ivan was below me over the fence for the umpteenth time (if he sees me, he files up) and Sweety was a foot away – standing on the fence taking bread from my hand. Ivan flew straight up in front of me and then flew a foot over Sweety’s head to land on the lawn behind me – reeb reebing. This duckguy is a total stunt pilot.

He’s a marvel, and self-taught, too, no duck flying school for him.

A friend in Wanganui is visited by dux who bang on the door to ler her know that they’re back, and fly out again on Christmas Eve,

Jojo, Aspen & Sweety sometimes come round into the patio and tap on the ranch slider with their beaks to get me to come outside & feed them. Pickles used to too. The only one who hasn’t is Bluey.

These dux hammer on the front door which is wooden. No polite tapping as your pooks do, they bang on the door in a very rude way.

I love it when birds walk in through the front door as they do sometimes, like tiny people walking in.
