Michael Cohen’s lawyer fed media story, falsely denied it

The political/legal circus in the United States takes another twist, with Michael Cohen’s lawyer now admitting he was an anonymous source for a CNN story making controversial claims about a Trump Tower meeting, and then lied about it on air.

In the US it is common for lawyers to use the media to try to portray things to their clients’ advantage, but that can backfire.

Washington Post: Michael Cohen’s lawyer has severely undermined to the case against Trump

In a pair of new interviews with The Washington Post and BuzzFeed, Davis has backed off two massive claims he made in recent weeks, including that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen had told people he witnessed President Trump being informed of Donald Trump Jr.’s 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer before it happened. He has also admitted he was the source for the initial report on that claim — despite denying it last week.

Davis also backed off his claim, this time made on the record, that Cohen has information suggesting that Trump knew in advance about Russian hacking of Democrats’ emails in 2016. “I am not sure,” Davis said. “There’s a possibility that is the case. But I am not sure.”

And in the BuzzFeed interview, Davis acknowledged he was a source for the anonymously sourced CNN story that first reported on the Trump Tower claim — despite having denied it last week by saying on CNN’s airwaves. “I made a mistake,” he said of his denial, adding: “I did not mean to be cute.” He claimed he didn’t lie but rather “unintentionally misspoke.”

However this came about it’s damaging to Cohen’s credibility. Davis is his lawyer and spokesman, after all, which means these claims effectively came from Cohen himself. Davis is now trying to take ownership of them and take the blame himself, but the explanations he offers are really difficult to accept, especially given the gravity of the claims.

And that has bearing on both the Russia investigation and whatever problems Trump may encounter from the Southern District of New York’s plea deal with Cohen on a campaign-finance violation (in which Cohen also implicated Trump). Cohen was supposed to be the guy flipping on Trump and telling investigators everything he knows about the skeletons in Trump’s closet.

This episode has to make everyone involved wonder whether his claims are all they’re made out to be — up to and including his claim that Trump knew about the hush-money payments beforehand. Regardless of how you want all of this to shake out, it’s best to base a case around people who won’t undermine it.

Cohen wasn’t a fantastic witness before; he’s a worse one now.

The investigators won’t be pleased about this legal circus in the media.

One of the most bizarre aspects of the investigations engulfing the Trump administration is the lawyers involved. Here we have a presidency on the line, and this is Trump’s team? The top legal spokesmen for each side are … Rudolph W. Giuliani and Lanny Davis!?

Giuliani has played media games as well.

The lawyers are almost making politicians look good in comparison.

Thats a shocker from CNN and its none other than Watergate journalist Bernstein who wrote the story. CNN lied to their viewers, again, there should be some sackings. Once again Brian Stelter in his Media Matters show ignores the story but its all part of the Get Trump media and the Fake News.

Lanny Davis represented Harvey Weinstein and is well used to lying his arse off to the media but in their desperation to take out Trump CNN forget again to do their job. Their ratings are off 23% which is no surprise.

I must confess to have stopped reading these stories, I’ll wait until the verdict comes out.

So, you aren’t as intellectually bereft as I previously thought. Now you know why I don’t waste my time on these threads. These stories are too fluid to find any meaningful anchor.

I would hardly have an MA Hons and teching certificate if I was intellectually ‘bereft’ (a very odd use of this word, but that’s to be expected of someone of your level of literacy) You, as I remember, just about managed ‘6th form certificate’.

Don’t be so patronising. How dare someone like you make such ridiculous comments about someone with my academic achievements ?

Your last sentence is all but nonsense.

          Teaching.

How many degrees do you have ? You seem to feel that you have the right to sneer at someone who has three sets of letters after their name, which is a bit odd unless you have more.

I think my use of the word ”bereft” is quite adequate. Yes, 6th form certificate and three UE subjects.

”Don’t be so patronising. How dare someone like you make such ridiculous comments about someone with my academic achievements.”

You have just berated me on another thread for my lack of interest and observations re Jacinda. It’s a pity you don’t realise your patronising ignorance towards me. My post above was to remind you of that. Your agnst confirms your inability to process that truth.

”Your last sentence is all but nonsense.”

If you can’t understand my last sentence perhaps you should consider a refresher course to get yourself up to speed.

My last gripe with you is your lack of flash words in the comments you post. I would expect words such as the following in your missives: eclogue, sibilant, rondo, unguent and oleaginous.

Please live up to these supposed degrees you have.

That was a poor showing from Davis – he doesn’t need to stoop to Giuliani’s level.

Davis has talked too much about what it was Cohen knows about the trump tower meeting and other aspects of the Russian investigation. I suspect that Mueller’s team came down on him like a ton of bricks and told him that if he or Cohen continued to do that that there’d be no cooperation agreement

Doesn’t change the outcome of Cohen’s guilty pleas though – trump remains an unindicted co-conspirator in federal crimes. And Mueller ain’t going away

The media are pretty furious he used them to peddle lies, CNN is still the holdout on apologizing and I guess that its because it is Bernstein who wrote the story.
Cohen told Congress twice that Trump didnt know about the meeting in a closed hearing so Davis didnt know, pretty ugly behaviour from everyone.
From what I understand there is no deal for Cohen to cooperate in the court filing of the guilty plea, cant go after Trump relying on Cohen as your star witness or Manafort.
Papadopolis apparently has nothing but will do 6 months for lying which seems grossly unfair, he is hardly a threat to anything just a young guy bigging it up in a chaotic campaign.

Daily Caller is reporting that the Chinese hacked Hilary,s server as well and Strozk was told about this but didnt act, his lover Lisa Page has testified about it.
Funny if anyone in the US wants to read any of the 33000 important emails in Hilary,s server that she illegally deleted they are going to have to get the Chinese or the Russians to forward them through.

The emails were not deleted illegally.
I know its hard when you live in a right wing fantersy world.
After millions was wasted over six years looking into the Hillary non issues. Not one indictment as a result .
All you have is gibbering conspiracy nonsense that only loons think is real.

      As to Trump .
      So far.
100+ criminal counts 35 total indictments 32 people indicted 3 companies indicted 5 guilty pleas in 14 months .
      More to come.

      • David

         /  August 29, 2018

Of course they were illegally deleted they were correspondence between the secretary of state and foreign governments and not only that she was told to preserve them by the FBI.

There is not a single charge, indictment, conviction that is linked to Trump/Russia collusion, thats like holding Shaw responsible for some eco loon breaking the law in Denmark.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort
Trump’s former campaign chairman is accused of committing crimes while working as an unregistered lobbyist in the US for the Ukrainian government and pro-Russia interests beginning in 2006.Trump’s former campaign chairman is accused of committing crimes while working as an unregistered lobbyist in the US for the Ukrainian government and pro-Russia interests beginning in 2006.

George Papadopoulos, a 30-year-old former Trump adviser, had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia.
Papadopoulos had made at least six attempts to set up a meeting between the Trump campaign and Russian representatives throughout the course of the 2016 presidential campaign, using a London-based professor named Joseph Mifsud and a female Russian national as conduits.

Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser
On December 1, 2017, he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations last December with Russia’s ambassador to the US at the time, Sergey Kislyak.

An indictment filed by Mueller’s office said Flynn “falsely stated” on December 29, 2016 that he did not ask Kislyak “to refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russia that same day,” and that Flynn did not recall Kislyak “subsequently telling him that Russia had chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of his request.”

lying to the FBI by members of the trump campaign about contact with russain agents has nothing to do with Russia or the Trump campaign or indeed Trump.
The fact that Manafort had a long history as working as an agent for russain operatives even while working as Trumps campaign chair has nothing to do with Russia or Trump

          ROFLMAO
Really mate you trumpies live an an alt truth world .
You dont lie to the FBI you take the filth if you really dont remember detail.
You only lie in an attempt to cover up the truth.

          As to the emails,
No chargers have ever been laid because she was not guilty of a crime .
She was well within her rights to delete the private emails at that time.

The fact that Cohen restarted the investigation days before the vote distorted what was a very close election.
You can not claim the FBI was doing a cover up in her favor when that alone cost her votes .

The belief she did something wrong is about as sane as all the crap over Obama’s birth certificate.
