Had to laugh this morning. Not long ago while I was in the lounge typing something profound as usual elsewhere on YNZ there was a loud BANG from my ranch slider in the adjacent dining room.

Concerned because it sounded like a blackbird might have hit the glass I went over to see if there was an injured bird on the ground outside.

But as I looked out, there was Aspen, standing on the ramp, looking up hopefully at me thru the screen door & saying nothing.

His usual method of announcing his presence & seeing if I’m around to provide his breakfast cereal is a single screech from the top of the stream fence. However, nowadays this invariably results in Ivan The Terrible immediately lifting off at a steep angle from wherever he is down in the stream, arcing up & over Charlie’s Tree & fluttering down nearly vertically into to my backyard. After which he will aggressively bully Aspen & any other pooks (except Sweety, who’ll fight back) away from their food & get it for himself.

Aspen’s obviously worked out the smart thing to do in these circumstances is just keep quiet & come round & knock on the door!

Bluey’s just come off incubation shift, had a wash (his beak’s wet and shiny), jumped over the fence and come running up quietly to the kitchen window as soon as he spotted me in the kitchen making a coffee.

As usual, I jumped up & knelt on the kitchen benchtop, opened the window, and gave him a handful of grain.

There’s something really endearing about their excited, expectant, little faces looking silently & hopefully up at me. I left him to it because the cold southerly is still blowing & was coming thru the open window.

But he jumped up on the trellis top and gave me a screech, & a pleading look, asking where was his toast bread, so …

The stream’s still clear, about 6″ higher than normal (rainwater still filtering down out of the Western Southern & Eastern hills) and, from timing some natural foam pieces passing a measured 3-metre section of opposite bank, flowing at something in excess of 60 kph.

Eli really had to work to power through the rapids, which are quite large and hummocky at the moment, to get some meat chunks this morning. The chunks wouldn’t stay wedged in rocks as the flow is too strong and must be eddying like vortices underwater and kept rolling down towards the rapids.

It was too much for him to keep position and go against the flow. He lacks tenacity & stamina. I think he got one piece & then let himself get washed back through the rapids and packed in hunting for the morning.

Whoops: Sorry. Here’s the permanent link. Posted the temporary one above in error.

At 5.30 pm there was another BANG on the metal mesh at the bottom of the lounge slider’s screen door. Expecting it to be Aspen, I went to the door and peered down, but this time it was Sweety, standing there on the ramp, looking up, with Jojo standing there seeing how her mum got on with this request for my attendance.

They poo too much for me to encourage them to hang around the patio or the ramp, so I went to the kitchen window and called to Sweety to come round there.

That’s real time in that gif above. When I call them to the kitchen window they run like hell. So funny. They’re so fast it’s taken me a couple of days to get one on video – & she still ran out of shot because I couldn’t keep her in the screen.

Not sure what you mean. There are about 10 little bloody poos on the ramp or the patio. They’re best left to dry & sweep off if they’re not hosed away immediately.

If you mean how many pooklets are there, I don’t know yet. There’s been a hatching though. They (except Bluey) are all taking the bread chunks over the fence, even Jojo. They might eat a little bit of the first one themselves, but they then jump up and over & the fence & take most of it – or any others – downstream. They come back for more until I stop giving it out.

The 3 adults are clearly doing nest shifts. And there are sounds coming from the hidden nest they only make around young pooklets.

I thought I might just have heard a pooklet peeping, but I couldn’t be sure as the nest is North of here and the southerly was still blowing strongly and roaring up the stream. Hard to hear something so faint.

I was being facetious….was it one or a lot running after each other.

I saw two dogs running after each other; one was cornered and leapt nimbly over the other’s back. One would chase the other, they’d playfight and then the chased one would be the chaser. Their mothers were standing talking as their two dogs ran around them in circles.

I loved to see the two running pooks, with Miss Pook looking back to make sure that her admirer hadn’t given up in despair. He deserved the reward that he must surely have won..

Oh, I see – no she’s just doing circuits up over the roof, under the front gate and round again.

Three is advertising a programme which seems to consist of people being filmed watching television.

    WHY ?

Can’t help you sorry. I’ve found if I watch too much three tv I suddenly feel like going and banging my head repeatedly against a wall, so I try to avoid it.

I only watch 3 news because it has less sport and I can’t stand 1’s manic weather man.

I can think of no reason to watch strangers watching television programmes that we, I assume, won’t see and wouldn’t want to watch if we could see them. Watching slobby strangers guffawing and eating crisps ? I can think of nothing worse.

        Do, do google Gogglebox NZ.

The UK version has won prizes…UK television must have really deteriorated if the best thing on it is videos of people watching television.
