A Glorious day in paradise up here in the kaipara.

Spent half an hour setting my new back door last night. Had to build a floor were the old concrete porch was. Scored a free glass door rather than the old solid one that was damaged by buggers stealing copper when the house was in storage. The door was 10 mm to narrow and opened the wrong way so built up the edge with one of the old ones and chiseled new hinge lands on the other side. Still have to finish fulling the old lock position and tidying up the changes.

Looking though the new glass I could see The stars were out in the clearest sky in weeks..

This morning checked the veg garden the salad veg I planted last week are already sprouting. For once I aim to sow a few more seeds every week so I get a constant supply .
Put in two grape vines they are just starting to bud another couple of weeks and it would have been to late..
The orchard has heaps of new growth looking forward to having some fruit this year.
The avocados the rabbit stripped of leaves are budding as well . It looks like i have only lost one out of the eight I planted.

Plant some custard apples, Griff. They are delicious. I can send you some seeds if you like. They grow into a small tree.

Apart from the fact it’s still bloody freezing down here in Welly because of a damn southerly I’m convinced that robert sent up here – damn straight.

The pooks are busy looking after the latest pooklet(s) in their hidden nest downstream opposite, the stream’s running clear, it’s not raining, I’ve got plenty of food, a heater, good, quiet neighbours and nobody’s shooting at me. Would rather be here than Idlib. That’s for sure.

Gorgeous day here. Just did a massive cleanup of a part of the covered deck that my wife had cluttered with an incredible number of empty pots and dead plants and rubbish and spiders. Restained the bits that needed it. Transformed.

Just been down to the eel spot and fed Ella, then gave Aspen some wheat and as soon as he got his toast bread he was off down the stream bank with it, taking it to the nest. They’re very circumspect down there. There were 3 of them – but even though they should know by now that I love their little bubbas and wouldn’t hurt them, they are trying to hide themselves and the nest from me. The damn wind’s bloody freezing. I had to put my hands in hot water when I came in to warm them up quickly. It’ll be a couple of weeks at least before I see any new little one(s). They’re mobile within a day but they won’t be allowed to go into the stream. It’s too swift, and hopefully the pooks all know about Eli & Big Ella. They’ve watched them going by from the banks sometime.

(PS: Ella doesn’t like being called Big to her face.)

What does freezing mean, Gezza ? It’s like summer here. I was cooked when I went and christened the new weedeater on the jungle that I laughingly call a lawn. owing tomorrow, groan, groan. I have just been admiring two waxeyes who are courting in the big tree, preening each other and giving each other gentle little bird kisses. Too, too sweet. I decided that they were moving just too much for a photo to work, and didn’t want to disturb Romeyeo and Juliet anyway.

Griff, the stars were wonderful here last night. We replaced the dunny glass in the front door with clear glass and it was money well spent. The stars were twinkling and beautifully clear.

When the top pane cracked in the back door, I had it replaced with clear. There wasn’t an exact match, the man said, and when the busted glass was out, I liked the ‘picture’ so much that I had plain glass put in.

I did wonder about that one. It’s supposedly 11 deg C in Welly proper but I videoed a wee bit of the pooks moving about in the bushes at the nest and 10 minutes was all I could stand. The wind’s so strong I’ll have to kill the audio on the video clips if I post them sometime. I did commentary you can’t hear over that awful rushing sound. And the chill factor is strong. The sun’s gone down. It’s just bloody cold Kitty. Really cold. Unusual for a southerly to blow through here for so long. 2 or 3 days max usually. We must be into day 5 now.

We had a nippy wind one day last week, but not an arctic blast. That’s one thing that I do not miss.

‘Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks !’

I remember how annoying it was to have the washing wound so tightly around the line that it took all day to unwind it.
