This is a previously unreleased song circa 1973 – Ray Davies 2018: “‘When we played a concert at Drury Lane in 73’ to celebrate us about to join what was called The Common Market, I decided to use the song as a warning that time was running out for the old British Empire. This song was recorded a few weeks later but never made the final cut on the Preservation Act I album. Oddly enough, the song seems quite poignant and appropriate to release at this time in British history, and like Europe itself the track is a rough mix which still has to be Finessed.”

God that’s nice. I love the Kinks.

Ray Davies is one of the most effortlessly complex but simple melody-makers I’ve ever heard. And his voice is like silk.

Two birds visited today,,,dark green/brown, iridescent speckled wings, yellow beaks. They are a bit slenderer than blackbirds, but more or less that size.

I cannot find them anywhere 😦

Fed Ella at midday and again at 3pm today. She put away 300g half a cat roll chub, no probs at all.

I actually threw three pieces in slow water to see it attract young Eli. He powered up thru the rapids in minutes, swiftly located each one with his smelldar, (improving) sucked them in – and spat them out! He hates the stuff. Dunno if it’s the texture or the taste he doesn’t like but he WILL NOT EAT THAT, thank you !

I’d picked up some reduced price blade steak at NW so took pity on his and spoilt him with 6 chunks of that, already prepared for this eventuality. Didn’t seem fair to have him do all that work coming up thru the rapids for no reward – except food that he cannot stand.

However, very soon I noticed my big, beautiful, grey & white River Shark smoothly undulating slowly as she calmly cruised on up to where the rejected cat roll chunk had fallen & lodged itself in the stream bed’s rocks and pebbles.

Eli soon realised that he’d been given all the real meat that was going, circled round and touched lips with Ella, then quickly curled about, straightened up (sort of) and lazily let the current whoosh him effortlessly downstream, back through the rapids, to his nearby lair.

Ella stayed with me and got fed 14 chunks of Cat Roll chunks, individually, from a stick, one after the other, listening to my smooth talking, but not really falling for my charm. I left her, after watching her glide down into the deepest part below the Eel Spot and hover there, protected from view, when she realised feed time was over.

This is from my extended session back down with Ella at 3pm. She came back, so I loaded up and scrambled down there again. She got through 39 chunks of the Cat Roll Chub today. Loves it. But I will try a cheap dog roll on Eli next. Ella eats that too. They both love real meat. But that’s a bit expensive for some poor bastard on less than 20k who’s not getting the Winter Energy Payment while Al and Sir Bob the Boofhead are, because Labour and MSD are fkn idiots!

Because I don’t get a benefit or government superannuation.

Your income should have been low enough, surely. I thought that low-income earners…oh, no children, you can freeze, mate.

No, they just forgot (or MSD didn’t tell them) there are some of us who have deliberately stayed right out of the overbearing, controlling, suspicious clutches of WINZ after seeing the stress & disruption they create in so many people’s lives. We qualify for a Community Services card, subject to proving how poor we are every 2nd year. That card gets me I think $2 off a doctor’s script. It once got me in to a repertory society play for student price. And it got me $20 off the Kenepuru Hospital emergency doctor charge on one occasion some years ago. That’s my lot.

Chunk 37 gives the best look of that four-set at Ella’s mouth-size. I had been talking to her and feeding her like that for ages when I suddenly thought why not try and get her open jaws on video. Not easy holding the camera, putting the chunks on the stick and balancing the camera. I didn’t manage to quite get the view I wanted so I gave up & put the camera in my pocket for the last chunk – No 39.

And blimmin Magnificent Ella then opened her mouth up for that one so slowly and so widely it was the damn money shot I’d wanted. It was like looking into a muppet mouth. It looked like she has a pale pink tongue but I imagine it’s just the bottom of her mouth, behind her white teeth and gums.
