Here’s something to close out Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori. It’s a call for unity.

Musically I like this though I don’t understand the lyrics, & I recognise it’s about pride in culture, but the visuals kinda send a double message to me about wimpy females & big macho blokes being the boss.

Glad to hear that your conversion to feminism has begun! Yes, perhaps the song is better minus the video. Translated lyrics can be found at:

          I’m not a feminist, snowy.

I’m just a man who grew up & went thru school with, & dated, girls who were taught to be independent young women with control of their own lives & minds & to not not put up – or shack up – with men who considered them anything less than their equal in intelligence, value & worth.

Sorry, I should have added a *facetiousness warning*.

The lyrics surrender bravery to men. My missus was the bravest person I’ve ever known.

I really think that is part of the problem with Maori violence levels. It is represented that way even in contemporary song. What are boys & girls to think are how they should be & behave from this?

I might move this to Open Forum; hope that’s ok.

Yeah it is ok, snowy. I had to stop & think did I want to go any further here & only did because few come & read my nature study rants these days. I should probably haul back on them.

I feel I’m crowding other people out Kitty. I get carried away with how beautiful these creatures are.

To me. It’s probably got boring for people who’re not me.

Hey Gezza, Please 8-( DON”T stop doing the YNZ ‘Nature time at Gezza Stream’ stories on GC Please. We all look forward to reading the latest in the saga of nga manu. We are not sure whether we should have a tangi for Pickles or keep an eye out for him. He maybe be one of the many birds that have flown into the low land. “The vid of Eli eating the meat is real scary'” a little man says to me but “NOOoo don’t turn it OFF!! I like EEL.”
Many people live with a stream at the back of their place but do not know it as intimately as you know yaws.

Hey Possum. I’ve just been down there feeding Big Ella now. There’s been a little bit of rain so the stream’s just a weeny bit muddy – which is good because it means when she goes down deep after feed time I can see her from close up, but others can’t. Tell the little fulla he wouldn’t believe how gently she bites & slides the food off the stick now. I wish he was here to watch how beautiful she is when she swims & turns around from so close up. I never knew that eels could be beautiful or that they are fish. But they are both.

Another standard September Welly weather day. Grey, Norwester blowing. Usual SAD pattern.

Pooks visited for brekky cereal & bread chunks in shifts as usual. Bluey first, then Aspen, then Sweety & Jojo together. As one goes back to feed & mother the pooklet, the unspoken understanding is the one still on duty can come over. Bread chunks get taken to pooklet.

Saw pooklet, clearly at times, during a brief sunny spell, thru binocs. Has really shot up & filled out already. Black fluffball, sturdy, long orange legs & toes. Red ring around the base of its white beak. Was with Jojo, up in the watch nest, she was feeding it something from the stream. It was cute, flapping its little penguin wings at her while she did it, the way they do.

It’s a steep bank the nest is on. They’ve made little walking tunnels & I think pooklet might get walkies in those. Only seen it out in the rushy-type grass once. I forgot to record its birthday. I’ll have to check. It’ll be mentioned here.

Looks like a boy, from here anyway. Jojo & Pickles looked different & this one, thru binox, looks like Pickles did at this age.

Ella & I have an arrangement now. She comes to the Eel spot & I feed her from the stick at or around 3pm. She’s still gorgeous. Never any hassle. Gentle as anything when biting & slowly pulling meat off the skewer stick & swallowing it. So relaxing watching her hover, undulating slowly, looking up with her round, blue eyes, waiting for the next chunk to be put in the water. I can move the stick around & she’ll swim around, following it. I don’t tease her. She gets it quickly. It’s just a little game we play once or twice.

I sharpened the skewer stick to stop it breaking up the dog roll chunks, then remembered to blunt the end a bit so It doesn’t injure Ella’s mouth or inside it.

The pooks come over to me sometimes, a metre or two away, & they accept I’m feeding Ella now & wander off to do stuff.

    1535 hours 🐧

I have been playing some EPs; Delilah, Son, Don’t Go Near the Indians, Snoopy’s Christmas, Wuthering Heights, Telephone Man….I remember how hilarious the last seemed when I was much younger, and it still makes me larf like anything. I could never sing it without ‘corpsing’.

I also have The Redback on the Toilet Seat.

The slow cooker is slowly cooking soup and it smells wonderful.

It is wonderful, as good as mother used to make.

Well done, Kitty. That is an almost impossibly high standard for many of us to achieve.

It has taken me years to achieve this standard; my new slow cooker has to take much of the credit. I also finally worked out the proportions and at last, soup as good as mother used to make.

            I want another one .
My old Slow cooker got tossed when I first moved onto the boat and cleaned out all the junk i had dragged around for years .

The bead maker is so easy, smells good and you can play with the ingredients.
Have a white/1/4 wholemeal with seeds baking now. Only this morning I was thinking a nice stew to mop up with home made bread would be Owesome .

The long term plan is to get a wood fire so we can do stews and soups on a cook top as well as heat water and warm the house.

Do you do dumplings? you can use scone mix almost as good as the real thing made with suet.

You & my tuakana (older brother) would see eye to eye on this. He makes his own bread, several types, & the pics he sends sometimes of the various different combo meals he gets out his slow cooker are mouth watering. I’m just whacking shit in the microwave & the beggar knows it.

               /  September 17, 2018

I don’t like dumplings and as I don’t eat meat, I I wouldn’t eat suet…I have always found dumplings stodgy.

I just throw vegetables, split peas (green and yellow) and some soup mix in, add water and let it cook until it’s ready (adding water as needed) I like lemon pepper in it.

The old sc was great for two people, but I never used it just for me. The little one does 8 meals of soup.

The Warehouse ones are good, but keep an eye on Briscoes who have great sales and free click and collect so that you can take advantage of one day & online sales (they also deliver for $5, I use the c & c for small things that aren’t worth having delivered)

            • Griff.

               /  September 17, 2018

              Thanks Kitty .
              I just had a look online .
The warehouse one is only 22 bucks.
I had the same thought about waiting for briscoes to have a sale to get a more reputable brand
The warehouse is always a lottery with the quality of their off brands.
Sometimes its the same as a well known brands product .
Sometimes its crap that lasts a few weeks then dies.

The slow cooker is a little one from The Warehouse that I bought after I had donated the big one to the opshop, Money well spent.
