What is/are ‘the Woke”?

I’ve seen the term ‘the Woke’ a bit lately and haven’t taken much notice of it, apart from noting that it as an unfamiliar term to me.

I was at a loose end so had a quick look at The Daily Blog, first time there in a month or two, the website design puts me off and the content is only sometimes worth checking out.

And headlining is The Woke are good at hating Winston, not so good at counting

The Woke be angry at Winston…

The Woke be angry at Winnie, but the Woke aren’t very good at counting.

Exactly what are the Woke suggesting

The Woke who spend their energy screaming ‘We’re different and you’re wrong’ aren’t exactly the best recruiters and in fact it could be argued that the Woke are alienating more voters than they are winning over.

‘The Woke’ is not exactly a catchy label, but I don’t know if they call themselves that, whoever they are.

There certainly are communication issues inside Labour and NZ First, and Labour could iron those out if they utilised Willie Jackson more and put him in charge of communicating Labour’s needs directly  to Winston and Winston would find a far better ally in getting Labour to walk away from neoliberalism, but we must not allow the Woke’s perfect defeat the good as it is their Pure Temple approach to politics as opposed to Labour’s Broad Church that is eroding the democratic majority vote share, not building it.

I thought (at a lose end remember) I shoukd find out what ‘the Woke’ was supposed to mean.

Urban dictionary:

Although an incorrect tense of awake, a reference to how people should be aware in current affairs.
“While you are obessing with the Kardashians, there are millions of homeless in the world. STAY WOKE
Getting woke is like being in the Matrix and taking the red pill. You get a sudden understanding of what’s really going on and find out you were wrong about much of what you understood to be truth.
I understand the extra burden it puts on you but I still feel everyone needs to get woke.

Not sure if that is what Bradbury was meaning. The red pill may be appropriate on his side of the political divide.

Oxford dictionary:

US
informal

Alert to injustice in society, especially racism.

‘we need to stay angry, and stay woke’
‘does being woke mean I have to agree with what all other woke folks say should be done about issues in the black community?’
‘the West Coast has the wokest dudes’

Sounds a bit wowsery. It was added to OED last year:

“By the mid-20th century woke had been extended figuratively to refer to being ‘aware’ or ‘well informed’ in a political or cultural sense.”

Sounds a bit like self praise.

Does anyone know how it is used in New Zealand?

Bradbury has often bitched about how “The Left” are tearing themselves apart by infighting. Yet here he is again slagging off a different faction to his own by sneeringly referring to them as “Woke”. In his own way he’s quite conservative and belongs to an older world where women and minority groups knew their place.

    • Has he faded away on the political scene? I don’t see much of him these days.

Perhaps he has no party to pin his political hopes on.

It’s difficult for him to maintain alliances due to his abrasiveness and argumentativeness. I know this is hearsay but I’ve been a party to conversations about how poorly he has treated female authors on The Daily Blog; he’s certainly not known as “female friendly”.

There were hardly ever any comments there & they weren’t adding anything to the sum of human knowledge or giving the next week’s winning lotto numbers – & if Martyn did the last one they’d be wrong.

To be fair to him, he does have to cope with the aftereffects of a severe brain injury which he suffered as a young adult.

I don’t think I was being unfair. I was just saying why I don’t go there.
I’m not likely to visit a political blog on the basis I should make allowances for something that might be a reason for why I see no value in what’s there.

No you weren’t being unfair. What I meant was that I wanted to “be fair” and provide some balance to my earlier criticism of Bradbury. Me posting comments after taking sleeping pills. I’m out!

Oh, I see. You probably don’t need those sleeping pills. Takes a little explaining. I don’t any more. Not for decades.

On the other hand, though, snowy. I watched quite a few online sessions of Waatea 5th estate. Martyn was a bit OTT but his political guests were frequently interesting to listen to and observe in group discussions. Got to see more of a side to them than we do in msm. I was sorry they stopped.

Tru dat. Don’t think Martyn has enough mates to raise sufficient funds for another series. G’ night!

I sincerely hope that it isn’t used here. It’s horribly clumsy and forced and makes the user sound illiterate.

An analogy, “Woke Leftist” is similar to “Born-again Christian”, they can’t stop telling you about how they see their world. And if you don’t agree, you are going to ‘hell’. However, unlike Christians, who try to convert you; they instead- condemn you.

I vaguely remembered seeing it somewhere before & wondering what it meant & it’s obviously a vague term used by people who aren’t even relevant to describe people who nobody likes.
