I saw Charlie Musselwhite at Sky city some years ago (2006) – great show. Midge Marsden & Bullfrog Rata opened for him.

What a treat! Not sure if you’re aware that he’s still releasing albums: most recently another one with Ben Harper earlier this year:

I went to hear Midge and Bullfrog at the Brown Owl tavern in Upper Hutt when they were touring. Excellent bottleneck slide work from Bullfrog. I bloody loved it. I was buzzing.

The woman I know who was at Woodstock was stoned as a headless chook much of the time that she was there.

It’s a glorious warm windless Spring day at Pookden Manor. When the pooklets Pickles and then Jojo were born & raised just over the fence from me, so I could feed and observe the whole whanau closely, as soon as the little tykes were mobile they would all disappear upstream or downstream, out of view, at various points through the day, foraging – sometimes individual pooks heading off on their own.

Even though they are fed by all the adults for up to at least three months (the baby-feeding instinct is strong) the pooklets start foraging themselves within days, even pulling up and eating the roots of some plants. With the pooks out of view I wasn’t sure how independent the pooklet was – but now they are nesting opposite, downstream, I’ve been able to watch what happens and when the group all break up, they make sure there is one caregiver with the pooklet at all times.

It’s really endearing watching the little black long legged short beaked kiwi running around playing & pulling on things while one mum or dad potters around nearby, occasionally call them to come and get an insect or something they’re just caught in the stream, or pulled out from the bank, keeping an eye on them.

Pooklet’s growing fast, but they are not yet encouraging it to swim, just a little wade in the shallows every now and then is all it does. It fell in when it was about 3 days old (gave me nightmares because Eli hangs around down there somewhere – but it quickly swam back to the bank.

The pooks watch the eels closely – but they don’t always see them from down there.

Do they hold its winglings when it goes paddling ?

You’ll have to make a little floating thingy for it to wear.

They are embarrassingly bald little winglings at the moment (I say nothing about this to the parents, of course).

Did anyone see the Kawakawa beagle towing the shop banner along and across the street, with her mother running after her ?

Her partner put the Benny Hill music on the video. Perfect.
