I used to absolutely love it as a young teenager. I would have been 13 or 14.

Another beautiful North Welly morning. Eli’s now eating off the stick too. Spent some time down on the parenga, feet over the edge, basing in nature, & noticed this young chap cruises on up several times a day, and then quietly cruises on back home again.

Hmm-BlueMan is a visitor here, too,

I was cooked today as I went out in a long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans and hadn’t enough sense not to wear sneakers and socks.

It’s been gorgeous here, too, there was the fattest waxeye ever seen on the Birds Hotel Tree. She looked as if she was about to lay 6 eggs,

No sign of Sparky, so I brought some treats home for the first comers to the bird table.

The pooks have moved Alex down around the bend to the South so I won’t be seeing pooklet for a while. Not sure why. Must be ok because they still toddle off downstream carrying bread and they only do that if they’ve got a pooklet to feed. Otherwise they eat it themselves, where they are.

Eli gives a good, hard bite on food proffered on the stick; Ella’s much more gentle.

To the North, I should’ve said. South is upstream. There’s a Southerly breeze blowing up the stream so with the sun gone now it’ll be cold down there when I feed Ella – might go and check if she’s there.

            Ella’s a lady.

Eli is still young, he’ll learn. I’m sure that the local eels aren’t 4′ long. Needless to say that since I’ve been looking, I haven’t seen any eels at all, whereas I used to see them at intervals. The carp around here are massive,

I haven’t seen any fish in the stream. Quite puzzling in some ways. It’s got such pristine-looking water & as you’ve seen from my videos they should be easy to spot, yet after a couple of years the only time I MIGHT have seen one was late one evening when it was getting dark & about five eels all turned, there was something of a melee, and I thought: “Hey – what was that? Was one of those eels that surfaced briefly and disappeared swallowing a fish. There must be some in there. I’d love to see them.

I must look up carp. I’ve only ever seen trout in streams – and tiny little native fish of some kind.

And now Ella, at 4.40 pm, after dinner, for comparison. Definitely a lady. Such grace. And a very big girl. My River Shark.

We have tiny fish near the walkway, but also the massive carp who are such a pest. They live mainly in the lake, but in heavy rain they come down a stream and swim beside the walkway. Be thankful that you don’t have them. People fish in the lake and boys do in the stream down the road, so there must be reasonable numbers of ordinary fish as well.

What an elegant colour Ella is; tres chic. Slide on, silver girl.

My stepfather could ‘tickle’ trout and other fish and catch them with his hands.

          Poacher!

          • Kitty Catkin

             /  September 22, 2018

What is ‘poaching’ about catching fish openly and legally and not on private land ? Are people poachers who fish with lines in public rivers and streams ? What about those who fish from boats ? What’s the difference between one form of fishing and another ? How often do you see piers and bridges lined with people fishing ? Are all these people poachers ?

A poacher is a thief, and my stepfather was NOT a thief, thank you. It may have been meant to be funny, but it wasn’t.
