    On another thread we have:

Twisted sister mounting ludicrous defences doesn’t cut it against fair-minded relentless positivity”

Well that’s all the permission I need!

Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ released on this day in 1991……just seems like yesterday.

Very disappointed. I went down to the Eel Spot to feed Ella & she came over looking as sweet-faced as ever as she waited for the next piece to be presented on the stick. We played the chase it game a couple of times. And when I went to resume just feeding her the rest in the feed spot, suddenly another huge grey and silver eel slid up right next to her.

It easily rivals Ella in colour & size. They were both right alongside each other, tails waving slowly in the current, faces level with each other, so I could see it’s only about 1-2 inches shorter than Ella. I could easily mistake this one for Ella.

This is the second time in the last 7 days that this eel has just suddenly slid in right alongside Ella at the feed spot like this. Last time it got one piece of dog roll intended for her. Ella doesn’t seem to mind. They don’t squabble. They do a kind of kissy-kissy checking each other out and then the newcomer soon just glides backwar,d and down deep, in the gentle current that flows below the eel spot, turns around, and disappears beneath the light reflecting surface back downstream.

I think this is Elvira. I had been calling it Elvis when it first began appearing and playing musical Eel Stump with Ella some months ago. It would go in via the underwater entrance while Ella was poking out the exit, prompting her to come out and swim round to check who was there, causing this other one to come and go round again to do the same. I caught this performance on video and posted it as a movie clip on one of my video channels. Then after reading up about these native longfin Tuna I realised it was too big to be a male so it became Elvira. Elvira’s an infrequent visitor from downstream, she has got tamed into feeding at the Eel Spot like Eli and Ella.

The last time this happened, by the time I whipped out the Nokia and the cellcam had booted up, Elvira had gracefully backed away and gone. This time I quickly pulled out my little 3G cellcam and got several seconds of perfect footage, of the pair of them, parked there, looking up, relating, close up and pulled back a bit so their size and magnificence was plainly evident. The light was perfect, the view as clear as anything on screen. Even at only 320x240p, with no zoom needed, this clip would display both eels clearly on full screen.

I was quietly woohooing, as I’m sure any professional wildlife cameraman would be. I pressed Stop, and the bloody thing said “Nothing recorded”.

It does this from time to time. Not very often, there’s no rhyme or reason, it’s just random. The only thing that fixes it is a phone reboot. And by the time it rebooted, and my alternative Nokia vidcam in my other pocket had also booted up, Elvira had departed. 😥

    C’est la via, I guess. 😐
