    The eels in the stream
    Swim round and round,
    Up and down,
    Round and round,
The eels in the stream are Gezza-bound,
    as they swim around (a-round)

Alex is doing well. Very confident and strong little fluffy black pretend-kiwi. The pooks are ranging 200 m north and south during the day and I quite often see Alex running around at the heels of one of the bigger pukekos, including Jojo. One teen or adult is always detailed to be the on-hand caregiver for an hour or two, & takes direct responsibility for the bubba while the others do their daily mahi elsewhere.

Whenever Alex sees me the pooklet runs immediately into the plentiful cover on the far stream bank.

Ivan the Terrible and Ludmilla have taken up squatting all day on my back lawn over the last two days. It’s a bit annoying for Aspen & the other pooks because Ivan gets stroppy with them. I have to play peacemaker and dole out wheat by name. Ivan knows: “Ivan … noooo!” in a low voice from me means “cut it out”. He at least manages a guilty look & stops grumping at the pooks when I say that.

Hennie and Fledgy Blackbird now join the competition for Gezza’s resources every day. They are never too far away. All the birds love the stream – the blackies bathe in it. Hennie’s nest is over the far side, cunningly concealed in amongst the tall ferns and blackberry dead bushes somewhere. She’s flown into them trailing all sorts of bits of foliage – some a foot long – during the building phase, which I think is completed now.

I went down to the Eel Spot about 8.45 am this morning (Sunday) and pulled that brick in the video out off the stream bed. It came down from somewhere with the last flood & it spoils the pristine natural look. Also didn’t want my eels scraping over the edges, although I expect they would probably just slide over it without harm. It’s a good brick, only a chip on one edge underneath. I’ll find a use for it. Eli was there so I took some food down & stayed a while to feed him.
