Just watched a huge, golden cream crescent moon slowly rise up from behind the forested Northwest Hill into clear jet black skies at 5.15am. I suppose it happens frequently but I’ve
never actually witnessed a morning moonrise before & just noticed it from my kitchen. The Sun will be up in an hour.

Seems to impress the tui. It’s started it’s bell-like dawn chorus call from somewhere in the dark up in the tree outside the kitchen window. It’s been doing this for a week. Always the same repertoire. Some bell like-sounds, whistles, then tweets and twitters and a couple of kraaks.

We had a huge clear moon here a week or so ago; a real hunter’s moon.

The tui song is very strange; beautiful trills then harsh creaks. There were parrots across the road earlier. I remember being at an event at a local museum when tuis began singing….alas, the bloody fools at the council sold the land for development and the huge tui’s trees were killed. I hate to think what the people living in that lovely street thought when the lovely island with the trees was turned into a subdivision.I haven’t been there since and look away if I go past the end of the street.

One ANZAC day, a shooting star shot across just before sunrise. Perfect timing. It was a lovely night/sunrise anyway,

No Ella today. Just Eli. Hope she’s ok and just happily resting up. Eli spat out the dog roll as usual. I had some ready for Ella and thought I’d try it again with him. Nope – he still expects the real thing. Meat or nothing.

The policewoman had enuf sense (of humour) to leave this one to the male officer.
