    Halloween…

A sign on the gate that says that this is a Halloween-free zone and a small but barky dog do it for me.

Just got back from brunch with ma and went down and fed Eli. That little guy is quite cute to feed, especially in the deep part of the Eel Spot. He comes straight over to where I am now, and then he hovers at a 45° angle, looking up waiting for each chunk. Sometimes I can get him to do aquabatics by moving the feeding stick around because it’s deep enuf.

The pooks let out an alarm for the others when they see an eel, but they just observe and the eels and they just avoid each other in the water. I’ve never seen an eel go after a pook. And the only time I’ve seen Ella or Elvira or Eli chase after a duck is when the duck has just plunged down in front of them and grabbed a meat chunk the eel was going after. When that happens they chase the duck and bite it.

Dawn Fawny turned up, with no duckling, so it seems all 10 have succumbed to predation or other misadventure within 3 days. She was accompanied by a purebreed mallard drake named Albert and the pair of them were happily seeing off other suitors. The waterbird adults don’t seem to grieve their lost young ones. She’ll be producing another brood of ducklings soon enuf this breeding season.

There’s a David Fawny as well. He’s the same colour as Dawn, but he’s a fawn-coloured mallard drake. He’s slightly bigger than Dawn and he has the classic brown and white flecked mallard drake downy breast feathers.

‘What ducklings?’ She should be called Mehitabel (‘What kittens?’)

Sparrers and blackies were eating cat biscuits this morning. Miss Thrush hasn’t been seen again, but no doubt will be.

I had a phone call offering a good return if I invested $10,000 or more. Yeah, right.

My Dawn Chorus soloist Tui, Thaddeus, was doing an evening solo out in Charlie’s Tree about 6.45 pm. He had his back to me and he flitted off before I could sneak out and get a video or photo. His colour is amazing at the moment. His whole back and tail are a bright blue colour somewhere between teal and turquoise.

Even the humble blackbirds are a fine sight at the moment, too, very glossy and iridescent. The sparrers are looking rather smart, as well.

Same here. The birds all seem to go out of their way to look their best in breeding season. That pittosporum that produces the overpoweringly strong joss stick-like scent is powering it out again tonight. I’ve had to close the windows as it affects my breathing. Very puzzling. It doesn’t power up like this every year, nor every night.

They seem to be a particularly goodlooking lot this summer, for some reason. Beautifully turned out and well groomed.
