Crap day here. Hosing down. Blustering southerlies. Ducks and pooks looking miserable, standing on the lawn, looking up – feathers blowing around. Poor Sweety Pooky was blown off her feet twice pecking up wheat grains. Sparrers and Fledgy Blackbird sheltering in my patio …

I drove up to the Rua to get some more wheat supplies and on the way back had to smile at a car turning in front of me at a roundabout: number plate number was: N0NE.

I also notice something I like about Welly is, whenever you stop at a pedestrian crossing, all the people crossing nearly always give you a smile and wave for doing so. Does this happen elsewhere?

‘Round here you wave at every driver you pass going the other way …

Those few you don’t know personally, probably tourists, seem to like it too.

Regular occurrence at pedestrian crossings in Kerikeri (where they have a massive overpopulation of pedestrian crossings called “town planning”)

Once heard a stranger here ask a local if they knew where “So-and-So” lived …

Local thought a moment and then said, “Orh, yeah, he’s my neighbour! Lives about 20 kms past me on the same road … “

Most people do here; that little raised hand that says ‘thank you.’ It’s like people saying thank you to a bus driver, even though they are just doing their job. Almost everyone says it as they are hopping off. It was noticeable yesterday when a group didn’t.

Same down here, when I am out walking I get plenty of arm exercise waving to people who seem to know me.
