Arrest after pipe bomb mail campaign in US

A man has been arrested in Florida and is reported as beinng a suspect in this week’s pipe bomb campaign where twelve ‘bomb-like’ packages were mailed to various politicians and media organisations.

It sounds like it may not have been particularly sophisticated  bomb operation.

Miami Herald:  South Florida man arrested in connection with suspected explosive packages

A Florida man has been arrested in connection to the string of suspected explosive packages sent to prominent Democrats this week, law enforcement sources tell the Miami Herald and other outlets.

Law enforcement sources tell the Miami Herald a trail of DNA evidence on either the packages or the devices quickly led investigators to a suspect identified as Cesar Sayoc, a 56-year-old man from Aventura. He is being questioned by FBI agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force since his arrest this morning at about 10 a.m.

Federal investigators quickly centered the investigation on the dozen crudely fashioned “pipe bombs” sent to top Trump critics, including Hillary Clinton and Cory Booker, on a mail sorting facility in Opa-locka. The devices have been recovered in New York, Washington D.C., California and South Florida, all with the return address of Debbie Wassermann-Schultz’s office. Several words, including her name, were misspelled on the packages.

Images posted on social media show federal agents examining a white van with windows covered in pro-Donald Trump and right wing stickers. Closeup photos of the van, posted by a Twitter user who said he saw the car at a stoplight in April, show rifle scope images over the faces of Hilary Clinton, left wing filmmaker Michael Moore and President Barack Obama. Another said “CNN Sucks,” along with an image of Trump standing on a tank in front of fireworks and an American flag.

This is likely to raise the rhetoric as the US heads into their mid-term elections.

Trump tried to use the bomb campaign to get out the republican vote.

There have been accusations flying in all directions.

It’s a very divided and toxic political situation in the US. Perhaps the President will show leadership and calm things down, but that seems unlikely this side of the election.

Trump is talking about it right now.

Trump:

These terrorising events are despicable and have no place in our country.

We must never allow political violence to take root in America. We cannot let it happen, and I’m committed to doing everything in my power as president to stop it, and to stop it now, to stop it now.

But the bottom line is that Americans must unify, and we must show the world that we are united together in peace and love and harmony as fellow American citizens. There is no country like our country, and every day we are showing the world just how truly great we are.

What Trump needs to do now is show that, over time, he can put his words into practice. He has been much the opposite of a unifying president so far. He won the election by attacking and dividing, and that’s how he has been running the current campaign.

Can he change?

Going to be hard for Trump to claim it was a Democrat “false flag” with this

He’ll find a way. His victory speech was being shown live on Aljaz tv when I woke up. Law enforcement became “we” and “I” – he is already claiming direct responsiblity for the capture. The man is a toad.

No, I like that he has done something. Einstein was an an all round genius. Average people can be a genius in a given field or endeavour.

Trump is in his element. I just hope he can hold on and get this wall build and put in place measures that will be hard for the Democrats to dismantle once they gain power again.

Einstein wasn’t an all-round genius; though he certainly was one his relativity theory was flawed with a constructed cosmological constant and his interests were pretty tightly focussed on maths and physics.

I don’t know if he’ll ever get that bloody wall built but I’m a supporter of sealing their borders, legalising those there and embedded, deporting new illegals. selecting their immigrants; not the other way round and then getting rid of Trump asap and finding another Eisenhower.

              ”Einstein wasn’t an all-round genius.”

I’ll rephrase: Einstein had an all-round high IQ…dissimilar to someone with an average IQ, but a very high achiever in a given endeavour.

Muhammad Ali for example was reputed(?) by some to have a low IQ. But he was a very high achiever in other directions.

              https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-Muhammad-Ali-had-an-IQ-of-78

The meeting we saw on 3 News looked like a Nuremberg Rally, Raised fists (and nobody could claim not to know what that gesture looks like) and bellows of what sounded like (please let it not have been) ‘Seig Heil Trump.’

Of course it’s not true that Mohamed Ali had such a low IQ, 78 is so low that he’d be in IHC. Boxers don’t need to be geniuses, but they would need to have an IQ much higher than 78.

Rogue nutters pre date Trump, political incivility pre date Trump hell we have had nutters here in sleepy NZ having a crack.
When the Bernie Sanders guy shot up the Republican baseball game leaving Republican Steve Scalise with horrific injuries no one blamed Bernie. When you start to blame robust debate and speech for violence you are on a slippery slope, speaking and debate are for the most part used by humans to avoid violence, if you cant speak to something what are you left with.
There is a reason that the 1st amendment of the constitution is the right of free speech.

Founding Fathers placed no restrictions on free speech, hence its free speech as it should be.
The Bernie Sanders point is not a deflection but the point that if you get to the stage where anyone be they a politician or a media outlet is to be curtailed in what they say just in case some lone nutter goes crazy then you might as well be China or Cuba.
No one blamed Bernie they all blamed the nutter and that included Fox news and the Republican party and that is how it should be.

They were not so profoundly naive to believe in ‘responsible’ free speech. The purpose of free speech is to allow lies and fake news. Lies and fake news have been with us forever.

Yes. The important point being that it is impossible to tell the difference between the truth and lies without free speech. The moment people try to prevent ‘lies and fake news’ the truth gets lost too. they are two sides of the same coin.

      A rise in right-wing terror

An analysis of the Global Terrorism Database by researchers at the University of Maryland published in 2017 shows a “sharp increase” in the share of attacks by right-wing extremists, from 6% in the 2000s to 35% in the 2010s. The share of attacks by religious extremists also increased, from 9% to 53% between the two decades.

Meanwhile, the share of attacks by left-wing terrorists and environmentalist extremists dropped from 64% in the 2000s to 12% in the 2010s.

Researchers point out that many recent attacks on US soil are carried out by individuals without any strong links to a terrorist organization—known popularly as “lone wolves.”

The study defines “right-wing extremism” as “violence in support of the belief that personal and/or national way of life is under attack and is either already lost or that the threat is imminent,” including anti-globalism, white supremacy, nationalism, suspicion of the government, and beliefs in conspiracies.

An analysis by Quartz of the same Global Terrorism Database confirmed that the trend persisted in 2017, when most attacks in the US were committed by right-wing extremists. Out of 65 incidents last year, 37 were tied to racist, anti-Muslim, homophobic, anti-Semitic, fascist, anti-government, or xenophobic motivations.

That list includes an attack by neo-Nazi extremist James Fields against a crowd of counter-protestors in Charlottesville, which left one person dead. It also includes attacks against a gay bar in Puerto Rico, mosques in Washington, Texas, and Florida, and a vehicle decorated with Jewish iconography in New York.

In the same period, seven attacks were linked to Islamic extremists, and 11 attacks were inspired by left-leaning ideologies.

No. He probably wasn’t born like this but was made that way early in childhood and this is now how he is. Because of what he is he would not even be able to see that anything needed to change, because there is only one person who matters to him and even his children are mere extensions of his own ego. Tiffany knows. She doesn’t tolerate being used like the other 3.

Why should he change, why should it matter that his words upset someones sensibilities and if he has to zip it then shouldnt the media be muzzled to just in case, then lets get the Democrats to zip it just in case.
If you suppress speech because you find it a bit hurty and it might trigger a lone nutter then what is going to be the outlet we replace robust free speech and opinion with…violence is all you are left with as people take to the streets. Robust speech is a very effective pressure release valve for people who dont feel they are being heard.

If a Trump supporter body slammed a reporter or punched a protester at one of his rallies then that is clearly on Trump with his sometimes crazy rhetoric, there is a link but there is no more link to Trump and the bomb guy than there is to the Bernie nutter who shot up the Republicans.
Trying to curb freedom of expression because you dont like Trumps language is terrible, if the guy was triggered perhaps take in an anti Trump video of Robert DeNiro which are unhinged foul mouth rants with threats of violence but no one is asking him to tamp it down just in case a nutter sends him a bomb.

The Democrats are a complete mess. They don’t know their arse from their elbow. They couldn’t organise a piss up at a brewery. They are a collection of objections to everything except what their sponsors have paid for.

The best likely outcome at the moment would be for Trump at a Trump Rally for Christian Fundamentalists to call on God to strike him dead if he told a word of a lie and for he and Vice President Pence standing next to him nodding to be instantly vapourised by a massive great lightning bolt & thunderclap within 60 seconds of that utterance.

Then for a new election when possibly a Saviour who is palpably sane, strong & moral might somehow burst thru the murk surrounding the Republicans or the Democrats & be swept to power on a wave of relief and hope.
