Merkel’s last term as German and European leader

Angela  Merkel has announced that she won’t stand again for leadership of the CDU party later this year, nor as chancellor of Germany, but she intends seeing out the current term (to 2021).

Merkel:

It is now time for me to share with you the following decision.

First, at the next CDU party conference in December in Hamburg I will not run for the office of party chairman.

Second, this, my fourth term, will be my last as chancellor of Germany. In the 2021 election I will not run for that office, or for a seat in the Bundestag.

And just for the record, I will not seek any political offices either.

That is still three years to go as chancellor – if she stays that long. The coalition government she currently leads was difficult to form, taking months after last year’s election, and may or may not last the distance.

Merkel has been a dominant European leader and a major world leader, but support for her and her party have  been slipping.

Behind Hitler, probably the worst leader Germany ever had….simply because of one issue.
She could have been remembered as a great German leader

    • Very much the opposite of Hitler – criticised for tolerance of refugees from different cultures and religions, rather than trying to exterminate them.

True..but has she set a fuse that will slowly exterminate her own people? At least Hitler had an ideal of protecting and expanding the fatherland..as should all leaders worth their salt.

        • Leaders worth their salt shouldn’t make such a mess of their country and their continent and become the biggest political pariah the world has seen. Hitler’s ‘ideal’ has gone down in history as being the pits.

Fark. Not often you see a comment as moronic as that one here.

When were you thinking we should bomb and invade Australia and subjugate those inferior Whiteys over there, Corks? We can’t even afford bloody fighter aircraft and some of our Navy’s dinghies are probably still lacking oars. We have to do bombing runs on empty beaches with C130’s to win victories over grains of sand. Do you think maybe you were born at the wrong time and in the wrong country, really?

I’m reading The Virtue of Nationalism. Yoram Hazony says Hitler wasn’t a nationalist but an imperialist.

I doubt she will last to 2021 given the results her party is getting in regional elections, the Greens and anti immigrant Afd have been the beneficiaries and coalitions are going to be very hard to form.
Europe is a declining unreformed mess then they have added millions of Muslim migrants, predominantly young single men, who dont intergrate well and like what has happened in England and France a parallel and economically isolated sub set of society exists out of sight of the wealthy elite and largely ignored. Denmark is addressing its problems head on as is Austria and Sweden is flirting with doing very un Swedish things. Germany will go the same way as the UK and France and ghettoize its problem.
As an example my Brother a Doctor in the north of England where in Bradford 25% of babies born to Pakistani,s have birth defects as they are now into the 2nd and 3rd generations of cousins marrying one another, its a horrid situation, the birth defects range in severity but its cruel yet nothing is done about it, barely even talked about. In areas around Paris unemployment can be 85% and totally lawless but again as long as the problem is contained no one cares.
This will be Merkels legacy and she knows it.

Probably the only ‘Right-leaning’ political leader, I have some respect for.. she seems genuinely about the needs of all Germans & refugees from middle east War zones

btw; comparing her to Adolph (corky) is just plain WRONG/disgraceful !!

I wasn’t comparing her to Hitler. My comments were circumspect and focused on immigration and protecting the motherland which is the responsibility of all leaders.Something that only Trumpy seems to understand.

The problem Zesd is that most of those ‘refugees’ are actually economic migrants from North Africa, not refugees from war zones.

That’s exactly right, Missy – and the difficulty is that they are claiming, as human beings, the right to a better life – insistent that the only way they can get one is by leaving their war-torn and/or hopelessly corrupt, impoverished lands where things show no signs of ever improving, by forcing their way into a Western European country – which they see on cellphones and in the expensive cars and luxuries ostentatiously displayed by their own elites and oppressors – by any means possible.

How this situation is best resolved is the dilemma for the West. It sure can’t just go in there and change things and make democracies work better by invasion. Quite a bit of the mess these countries are truly is a legacy of colonialism having screwed up the original tribal order and leaving the countries vulnerable to the predators who rose to the top of the food chain.
