Another lovely morning in North Welly. No wind (that’s right; not even a hint of a breeze in Welly at the moment.

Bluey & Sweety both arrived for their wheat brekky under the kitchen window around 6 am. Bluey’s polite invitation to Sweety for a bit of hows your father was politely declined & he wandered away back to the stream apparently ok with that. Sweety took a bread chunk down to Alex, near the water’s edge, where he seemed content looking for suitable insects or plant roots to eat & not at all whiny this morning. Eli was down in the stream on the far side, and hid under some overhanging foliage down by Aspen’s Beach.

Driving down from ma’s place this morning I went past a young teenage girl delivering the Tuesday junk mail of advertising pamphlets and suchlike. And it went thru my mind that it’s always teenage girls who deliver the advertising guff to letterboxes around here during the day. Never teenage boys?

It’s a boy here. He’s a nice boy, not the brightest of the bright, but we can’t all be that.

I painted a little ‘no advertising/circulars/flyers’ please because the No Junk Mail ones seemed so rude and I couldn’t find a No Circulars Please anywhere, although a friend has a $2 one. They came back into the $2 shops soon after I DIY, but I like my colourful little one.

A bird has just called for more pork; it’s obviously someone mimicking the morepork call, and not well enough to make anyone think it is one.

I never remember to ask where the magpies are that fly around saying ‘fucking magpies!’ all day.

Magpie Song (to the tune of ‘I’m a Little Teapot’)

        I’m an evil magpie,
        Black and white,
        Voice like a chainsaw,
        Head full of spite,
        When you see me flying
        Take a gun
        And shoot me dead.

How my stream looks at the moment. They must still be doing regular releases thru the flood control gates up at Stebbings Dam, 10 km upstream. My lovely crystal clear water turns to this soupy looking mix for a few hours, although it clears again quickly.

I could see a smallish eel (maybe Eli?) coming up close to the surface over by an overhang opposite the Eel Spot, but quickly disappearing into the muddy depths. I wonder if the eels are more likely to cruise around in the daytime in murky water?

Their eyesight is not very sharp; they appear to find their way around in the water via their (raised) nostrils (smelldar), by tasting the water, and possibly track their prey with the assistance of rows of tiny blue dots between their eyes and their mouths, which I think might be very sensitive electrical sensors for picking up the tiny electrical fields living things produce.

Have you read the Gerald Durrell book where he tells a Captain (someone who despises animals, anyway) that animals invented things like electricity, radar, underwater breathing devices and various others….and proves it ?

I can make a basket because I have seen them made and was taught at Girls’ Brigade as one of the art and craft things, but I doubt if I could make a neat little hanging bag like a waxeye nest even with hands instead of their beak and claws….and they aren’t taught.
