Gang-related shooting in Stokes Valley: ‘It’s not safe’
A man has been shot in a gang-related gunfight in the Stokes Valley area, police say. The man was shot on Saturday night and taken to hospital in an ambulance with “non-life threatening” injuries, police said.

Police were first informed of the gunfight at 11.56pm. Soon after, they received multiple calls about gunshots going off throughout the valley. But police said later they believed the gunshot sounds were actually fireworks being let off.

A man in the area, who Stuff has agreed not to name, said he left the area because “it’s not safe”. “Police are there because gang members from both sides are starting to gather in numbers,” he said. “Police are in the middle.” He said there were “lots of families in the area”, and many felt unsafe.

Police said they would maintain a strong presence in the Stokes Valley area while investigations continued. They are seeking witnesses to contact the Lower Hutt police.

    Heather Du Plessis-Allan:

I’ve got a lot of time for Trevor Mallard. He’s a good laugh. He’s (surprisingly) a sucker for babies. And he was a really good electorate MP.

But, Speaker of the House isn’t proving a career highlight.

He’s been accused of bias towards Labour. And even worse, of trying to protect the Prime Minister. And, much as I like the guy, I have to admit he deserves the criticism.

Herald political editor Audrey Young has seen a fair few Speakers come and go so she knows what she’s talking about. In a column this week, she wrote that Mallard has “an inbuilt bias against National Party leader Simon Bridges and a soft spot for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern”.

Ouch. That’s a stinging blow. But he was asking for it.

In the end, Mallard’s soft spot for the PM is backfiring on the Government. And so, if he cares about Labour as much as he appears to, he’d be wise to start playing fair. Just so it gives National one less way to wriggle off an awkward hook.

    Hard to ague with that.

      Haven’t we all?
Bridges is not very likeable or admirable while Jacinda certainly is. Trevor can’t be blamed for feeling the way the rest of the country feels. Just look at the popularity polls. Simon’s barely on the board. In any case, those of us who fumed over Speaker Carter’s fawning protectiveness of John Key will be cheering Trevor’s inclination toward the nice one.

Robert doesn’t seem to understand that the Speaker of the House is not there to look after one side at the expense of the other, no matter what their own feelings are, they are supposed to be objective, not blatantly discriminatory.

Being nice to the PM does her no favours at all. It’s demeaning.

No, I’ll bet more than just Clark and Twyford are glad he’s demonstrably on their side.

Most people will be happy that Trevor treats Jacinda well, as most people love Jacinda – a friend of hers is a friend of ours. Curmudgeonly Righties need not apply.

He’s there to be Speaker, not nursemaid.

A PM who needs protection is not a good PM. Someone in that position should be capable of looking after themselves, and the Speaker is supposed to be neutral, not blatantly favour one side and discriminate against the other.

Any proof that most people love Jacinda and are happy to see her looked after by the Speaker at the expense of the other major party when when the Speaker is meant to be objective ?

Whoever he was, he was able to live in an innercity apartment and must have been attractive and plausible enough for an intelligent girl to go off with him quite willingly. I don’t blame the other 1,000,000 or so people in Auckland who had nothing to do with it. Only that pervert who got his kicks from killing a girl is to blame.

I heard that Tinder is being mentioned in connection with Grace Millane. The poor girl, how dreadful if this happened.

If it’s true, I hope that it will make other people think before they take the risk of going to meet a stranger in this way. Tinder is well named.
