Elvira never forgives a bully ! You need to keep right out of her way ! 😐

You can see how gloriously sunny the days are and how wonderfully clear the water is from this and other recent clips I’ve posted. Videoing at the right time and from the right angle makes all the difference. That’s just a little 2mp Cell Vidcam, but they’re only a metre away. There’s about four eels down there at the moment. 1 metre skinny Granville Shortfin and another slightly shorter shortfin eel, Tameiti Longfin, & Elvira Longfin. Elvira sees them all off at feed time. Even though the smaller, slimmer eels are very fast and manoeuvrable in the water, and she moves with slow grace and elegance, when she puts the power on to go after them she’s like a flexible torpedo, very swift.

Is that flash Elvira zapping poor Granville ?

I saw a tui sitting on the verge. It really was one and not a blackbird as I first thought.

While those eels were sorting out their issues beneath them, this clever mallard mum took the opportunity to swiftly shepherd her four well-behaved teenagers thru a gap. She’s got four left out of probably 10. She’s done well given the duckling attrition rate here is damn near 100%.

The stream is starting to fill with male and female ducks, and the drakes are whistling again to get the ladies’ attention, so the 2nd breeding season since the first in Spring is about to start.

Do they put two claws in their mouths and wolf-whistle ?

No. It’s quite funny. They suddenly lift up and then bob down in the water and whistle as they do this.

I only noticed it last breeding season when the stream was chocka with ducks sailing up and down in large task forces of males and females and I wondered what new, exotic bird had arrived and was doing all this whistling I could hear on the air. Then I realised it was coming from the stream & there were dozens of whistles – but the stream was so full of ducks I couldn’t tell which ones were whistling.

I looked it up online and it described what the drakes do during mating. After that I watched groups of drakes around females until I finally saw one do this manoeuvre to turn the hens’ heads, then other drakes doing it too. I posted a video here of one doing it some months back.

              Whenever I see a duck
              I hold my beak erect
              And then bob and down
And everybody knows I’m in love….

              I whistle a loving tune,
              And every single time
The loving notes in the tune
Show that sweet duck that I am in LOVE…

They’re blimmin lotharios though, those mallard drakes. They’re all kissy kissy and luvey dovey and “You’re the only girl for me, Sweetcheeks”, & then as soon as the poor girl pops the eggs out they dump her & swim off after any other unattached good-looking piece of tail & leave her to bring up 10 kids on her own ! 😡

The caption is ‘Another problem of deforestation.‘ I have it in the loo and still find it amusing, although it’s been there for some years. It’s a classic. Mine is fading, I must reprint it. Blimmin funny 😀 😀 😀
