It’s 9.30 am and Sweety has just knocked on the door to request some more wheat.

There has obviously been a nest-sitting shift change with Bluey, because both of them got fed around 7 am Bluey, (and Alex) and 7.30 am Sweety (and Alex, who is no fool for a youngster).

I thought I’d got her on video doing this because it’s so funny to watch. She stopped door knocking and got very wary with me after, first Jojo, and then my best constant visitor pook friend, Aspen, were murdered (probably by a cat whose owner thankfully seems to have now moved) & she saw their bodies at the stream edge.

But a couple of days ago I heard a bang & thought something had fallen over in my patio. When I went to check, and opened the screen door (it has a fine metal mesh on the bottom) there was Sweety, on the ramp, waiting … after knocking on the door.

Anyway, I just fed her some more wheat and left her to it, but she came back while I was typing this, and knocked again, as she obviously felt what she’d been given was insufficient to meet her requirements.

I’ve just given her a bread chunk (and tossed one over the fence for the whining Alex, to shut him up – did I mention he’s no fool?) and instead of eating it here on the lawn as usual she has hopped the fence and taken it to the nest. So either the eggs have hatched or they’re about to and she’s taking some food to Bluey.

Oh – when I said I thought I’d got her on video, I’d quickly pressed record, and had the cellcam on her as she knocked, 3 times, but when I pressed ok to stop recording as she had walked around to the kitchen to see if I was there, it started recording! Drat it.

This is Fledgy Blackbird. I’ve known Fledgy ever since he turned up at my front door in the dark in October last year & I couldn’t work out what kind of bird he was because he had tufts on his head. He was quite tame and I sat on the Welcome mat next to him to take this photo with the cellphone light on.

He’s hung around ever since so I’ve watched him growing up. He still has some baby brown feathers & although he’s not tame, he is a daily visitor for some bread and does get quite close to me to ask for it.

The only problem he has is that whenever I give him bread he gets mugged by sparrows & this has led to his adopting a particular strategy to avoid it.

The only way to get a pook kid to stop endlessly whinging is to feed it. All my adopted grandpooklets have been just the same They carry on like this for the first five blimmin months. 🙄

(PS: It’s always embarrassing listening to myself talk to the pooklets and Sweety because for some reason, as they have high-pitched voices, I automatically baby talk in a high voice too.

I only talk to Bluey like a bloke !)
