Man finds gas leak with a match

Someone old enough to know better.

ODT (NZME):  Man burned after checking gas leak with match

A man using a match in an attempt to find a gas leak has been seriously injured after causing a boat explosion near an island in the Hauraki Gulf.

The man, in his 60s, was seriously injured with burns to his face and hands after trying to trace a gas leak with a naked flame.

Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter (AWRH) intensive care paramedic Chris Deacon said the man was okay despite the explosion and was nursing mostly superficial wounds.

“He smelt gas and confirmed that there was gas by lighting a match. Which is a very tried and true method of finding gas. Unfortunately, it is not a very good method.”

“He jumped straight into the water. He cooled the burns immediately, which is the right thing to do. He lost quite a bit of hair, he lost his eyebrows and eyelashes.”

He’s lucky that’s all he lost.

When I was a student nurse, my first patient was an old bloke who lived in a caravan. One night he rolled home drunk, as usual, and turned the gas on but didn’t light it. The next morning he lit a match and was blown out of the caravan by the explosion. He was also lucky to be alive, he was badly burnt.
