65 years since the Tangiwai disaster.
My parents talked often about Tangiwai and the ’31 quake
and losing to the Boks in ’49.
My first lived through disaster not counting
losing to the Springboks in 1970
    was the 1968 Wahine disaster.
The Erebus crash in 1978 seemed a long time after
but was actually only ten years later.
    Then 9-11-2001.
Have not really had much serious happen to us in NZ these past 60 years then?
The closest thing to a disaster I have personally experienced
is when decimal currency came in when I realised
that instead of getting 12 wine gums for a shilling I
would only get 10 for a ten cent piece.
A traumatic experience so young has had a life long effect.
I swore off National then and never went back.

Wasn’t there quite a big, damaging earthquake in Christchurch not so long ago?

mmmm…yes, I think that there was one…and wasn’t there a mine explosion ? And I seem to remember Kaikoura being cut off after an eathquake and a road slip….and something happened at Aramoana….

I didn’t know that ‘9-11’ was in NZ.

Ghastly as the Russian disaster is, it was marvellous that the baby was heard just in time. What a survivor. Placid and pink after a night in sub-zero temps.
