Look, another petition

Petitions used to be an important tool in the democratic process, but now they are so overused they are easily ignored but politicians (unless they want to use them as justification for something they want to do).

Petitions are becoming so common, and it is so easy to get online ‘signatures’, most of them are a waste of time apart from being a means of harvesting contact details from those who sign up to them.

You don’t mean that you think that the petition to reinstate Suzy Cato to Dancing With the Stars was a waste of time, even though the people who make the programme couldn’t do it anyway because the voters wanted someone elsr ?

adamsmith1922, Oh, so Pete’s “Petitions used to be an important tool in the democratic process …” is an untrue statement?

To which you replied, “Very true” …

I believe in Switzerland – whose direct ‘considered’ democracy many would have us emulate – a petition can trigger a referendum …

Presently in NZ the required signatures in figured way high, I think, at 300,000 …?

Maybe we should have a staggered series of ‘stages’ where petitions that reach a certain size receive different though meaningful forms of attention … ?

This would allow smaller petitions an opportunity to be heard and acted upon.

There have been at least two attempts at petitions about dealing with Dog Attacks plus Menacing & Dangerous Dogs which have both flopped …

Public transport fare increases seem to pale by comparison IMHO.
