Farrar belatedly addressing moderation at Kiwiblog

Kiwiblog has long had problems with lack of moderation. David Farrar can write good posts, and there are a lot of knowledgeable commenters who are worth looking out for, but the comments have been blighted by abuse and highly questionable agendas.

The Christchurch mosque terror attacks, and responses in comments at Kiwiblog, have finally prompted Farrar into taking more action.

It’;s difficult enough moderating a small blog like this, especially when some people are persistent and determined to do as they please despite requests and warnings to comply with fairly liberal guidelines.

Monitoring a blog the size of Kiwiblog is a huge task. It’s common for posts to have hundreds of comments throughout the day and night.

Due to lax moderation for years it is an even bigger task trying to get things under control there.

Yesterday:

General Debate 18 March 2019

Comments turned off until I have had time to delete and sanction those who have crossed the line.

UPDATE: Comments now back on. But they will not appear until manually approved. Those lacking in empathy will probably not appear.

This was a drastic step. I’m not sure when comments were turned off, or on again with moderation, but the comment rate slowed down considerably.

And later in PM announces inquiry

The last comment at Kiwiblog appears to have been posted at at 9:20 pm last night, so something significant is obviously going on there. Time will tell how that pans out.

However moderation and comments go now there it will be a major challenge changing the widespread perception that Kiwiblog is an abusive and toxic environment, with racism, political abuse and white supremacy issues.

Whale Oil has been heavily moderated for years, but that has largely been for message control and manipulation.

Comments there yesterday indicate that they still have problems with some of their content, both in posts and in comments. They may have stopped swearing, but they still allow political abuse, and anti-immigrant and ansi-Muslim sentiments.

They have started today with much of the same old anti-Muslim lines (that Farrar appears to be trying to claamp down on): https://www.whaleoil.co.nz/2019/03/face-of-the-day-1906/

Just as guns are a tool that can be used for both good and evil so are religion and the internet. (And cars, knives, logic and politics …)

We have to live with compromises.

Over at Kiwiblog some of the comments come up in pink and others in yellow while most ave a white background. What does this signify?

    • It’s to do with ticks. Yellow means +20 or so upticks. Pink is +20 or so downticks. +30 or so downticks hides a comment.

Yip you know when I have pissed off some retards.
4 down ticks for a totally factual comment with no spin or angle at all in any way.
From now on I will just subtract a 4 butt hurt kids quotient from whatever karma I get.

You wonder if, given Farrar’s close links to National, the state of posting at Kiwiblog had become a political embarrassment post the mosque shootings. If that is the case was it not a political embarrassment prior to the shooting?

The national party on its own website was hosting a page for a petition to protest the signing of the UN Migration Compact. “UN Migration” in their context is a codeword for Muslim migration of course.
They have removed it now .
I couldnt have seen Bill English allowing something as overt as that – but Simon Bridges is leader now

National had a perfectly valid and rational reason to be against the UN Migration pact. To conflate that opposition with white supremacists is unbelievaby tone deaf partisan absurdity.
National have been the most pro-immigration party in parliament for some time. It is the COL that have come up with the biggest xenophobic clangers. Labour more against the Chinese, but Winston very specifically against Muslims.

And yet from the left it’s “look over there at Hosking, Bridges and Sean Plunket” with not a word about the cesspool within.

          ‘xenophobic clangers’….National M.P’s for !100 k…’I prefer 2 Chinamen,rather than an Indian or Filipino.’

Dr Jiang who refuses to speak to English speaking journo’s is a fine National M.P and …fundraiser.

Yep, a complete cock-up by National. Obviously took it down because the frothing twitterati decided it was effectively the equivalent of Mein Kampf to disagree with the UN.
And then got ham-handed with a stupid lie about the timing. All too common still from Bridges, unfortunately.

And like clockwork Blazer arrives to prove my point that the left are too busy looking at others to see the rot in their own government.

And quoting JLR in a supposedly private call trying to set up Bridges is hardly a clanger is it?

            Bridges actually said:

“two Chinese would be nice, but would it be one Chinese or one Filipino? What do we do?” – hardly crime of the century is it?

How can it be legit ..but then take it down…
Was that like the other UN thing, voting with Security Council on the Israel resolution…was that too a quick turn around
Funny that it happens when it involves Muslims and the UN

Please don’t insinuate I post at Kiwi Blog, I don’t.

But given this blog is like a drug for you, a more censored KB will start the process of ‘Cold Turkey’ for you.

Like the Phoenix, you will arise as a reborn better rounded pensioner.

Something as terrible as what happened occurs and suddenly the big question, “Where did all that hatred come from?”

Anyone reading Kiwiblog over years wouldn’t, they’ve seen it virtually every day. (Has there been more since October 2017?)

The vileness might not have seen the perpetrators taking weapons out, abusing people in public or carrying placards but it is part of the landscape.

My cynicism has it that David Farrar is cynical enough to implement changes for political appearance reasons not because of some grand awakening or sudden recognition and a desire for edification of the site and the community.

Kiwiblog does get a few rogue commenters so it’s good if he’s tweaking his moderation system. Largely I think the uptick, downtick thing is quite successful but there are a few idiots who ruin things.. But the actual articles on Kiwiblog are good. DPF’s commenting on local issues is insightful, intelligent and thoughtful, which is why it is such a popular blog. He will give credit to Labour when it’s due. He isn’t sensationalist. He puts forward a reasoned point of view. The Standard by comparison is more like whaleoil with sensationalist tabloid accusations and personal attacks, and also plenty of rogue commenters. Personally I like seeing DPF’s take on the issues of the day and without it our news/blog landscape would be quite depleted.

Sunny, DPF has a very difficult job that is why are trying to monitor too much he gave up. He is trying to sort things now. I might get censored her for a quote and the in my opinion is OTT. I think it is okay to refer to Ardern as a liar as it is a fact. It might even be okay to refer to her as evil as that is my honest opinion. However, think it unacceptable to make comments about her teeth.

I hope DPF can sort things out.

      • I think it just reflects on you Chuck when you refer to the Prime Minister as evil. And referencing a physical feature is petty.

It will take a lot for DPF to sort things out.

    • Duker

Please Sunny…DPF is endless hit jobs on left wing, still orchestrated from Nationals parliament offices and their Stasi like Reaserch Unit , where he began his work for the party.
His posts contain endless falsehoods and very occasionally the worst sort of political lies that even Trump will blush at.
That’s why he such an audience of the right wing of the national party….because he’s expert at his his twisted memes

    “Moderating Kiwi Blog”?
    Joke of the year.
The site like ZB and Magic talk are the go to places for white right wing nutters.
With out white right wing propaganda there is no Kiwi Blog.
    That’s what it’s for.
Even if it closed down it would just reappear immediately some where else
under some new name but with same old white right wing bigotry.
New Zealand did not change on Friday.
Just had a weekend off and by the looks of all media outlets
normal service has resumed but even more vehement than before.
Indignant right wingers are flailing away at any one who questions
white right wing mantras and are making it clear that nothing
will change their beliefs in fact they intend to strengthen
white right wing manta even more.
    New Zealand changed?
    Not on your life.
Certainly not on the lives of the 50 Kiwis murdered
in their house of worship by the angry white right wing male
    during the Friday massacre.

FB: “Certainly not on the lives of the 50 Kiwis murdered in their house of worship by the angry white right wing male”.

Angry white ‘Australian’ ‘far’ right-wing male ‘extremist’ – there, fixed it for you as the massacre wasn’t undertaken by some bloke writing a comment on the ZB website or even David Farrar.

        A valid perspective.

Like the perspective that a car bomb exploded in Kabul by a Muslim killing Muslim people = all Muslims are evil and the blame goes to all Muslims on the sidelines wherever they are but an ‘Angry white ‘Australian’ ‘far’ right-wing male ‘extremist’ ≠ all ‘Angry white ‘Australian’ ‘far’ right-wing male ‘extremists’ nor all white ‘Australian males nor all right-wing Australian males nor all right-wing males, nor all males, nor in fact anyone on the sidelines?

Spot on. Kiwiblog is a cesspool of redneck vitriol, and Farrar does nothing to edit or block responses. No better than Facebook Live or 8chan.

Its hell when the rightwing rhetoric is being throttled back…frustration grows

Sorry that it has come to this. I think I’ll have to find another forum if this continues much longer. I notice that even though Cam Slater’s Whaleoil is much maligned here, that blog is actually showing some balls and has the courage to stand up to the Woke generation and say it like it is.

I see Farrar is offering unmoderated posting to those who post under their real name or identify themselves via a link to FB etc.

That seems a good move. There are occasions my real name prevents me from making a comment because it would breach privacy for someone else but mostly it is healthy I think.

    • Some seem to think it’s the end of the world, and the end of free speech. A lot of selfishness from thnose who think they have a right to free for all in someone else’s place. DPF has to do what he thinks is right.

If he manages to weed out the worst of what was there most people are likely to like the changes.

      • PDB

         /  March 19, 2019

I never read the comments on Kiwiblog, just what DPF posts. It wouldn’t be any great loss if he removed the ability to comment or limited comments to only those using their real names.
