Parliament – Ministerial Statements – Mosque Terror Attacks

Opening and Prayer:

SPEAKER: Salaam alaikum. As part of our expression of sorrow and of our hope following the terrorist attack in Christchurch, I have invited Imam Nizam ul haq Thanvi to say a prayer. He will do so in Arabic and then it will be repeated in English by Tahir Nawaz. Following this, my colleague Adrian Rurawhe will say the parliamentary prayer in Te Reo, and it will be repeated by Anne Tolley in English.

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN (Prime Minister): I wish to make a ministerial statement relating to the Christchurch mosques terror attacks. Assalam alaikum, peace be upon you, and peace be upon all of us.

Hon SIMON BRIDGES (Leader of the Opposition): As New Zealand woke on 15 March 2019, none of us could have imagined the horror and terror about to be unleashed on our people.

Rt Hon WINSTON PETERS (Leader—NZ First):

MARAMA DAVIDSON (Co-Leader—Green):

Honesty, I can’t wrap my head around this. I thought Simon and Winston would show some kaha on gun control and censoring of the internet.

    Nothing.

Labour and the Greens are true to form..they are honest socialists, and their actions were foreshadowed by Helen Clarke on Saturday. I have no problem there.

But National and Winston? Knee-jerkers of the first water. Gutless too. They could have at least waited and had a more measured approach. I wonder what the political backlash will be like?

The PM has basically said this mass murderer Tarrant won’t be mentioned. He will be ignored.

I have news for the PM…he has pulled the string…and you are jumping.

      Totally agree.

This is a solemn time in our history. Knee jerk reactions reveal our extreme vulnerability.

Meanwhile, more selling out to the Chinese (West coast dairying business).

I’m no conspiracy nut – but – could it be possible social media is being played by communists to destabilise our internal Kiwi relationships? I simply cannot believe the mindless vitriol thrown at myself here in respects the Christian issue, at a time of serious national grief. (See open forum).

People have shown interest in international IQs lately. It bothers me how jumbled up that debate becomes (with knee jerk emotive reaction). [Deleted generalised attack on a nationality]

We’ve also been talking about Kiwi ideology. Surely we need to grow into this with grace and with cunning to match our national need. How are we utilising our individual IQ?

[Deleted political conspiracy speculation with no supporting argument.]

Parliament should behave with scientific caution at all times, whatever the situation. Jumping to prayers to whichever god cries the loudest is a disservice to Kiwis.

(The reason I often finish my posts with a personal affirmation about where my hope lies, or with a challenge to consider Christianity, is because the readership here is obviously not restricted to the usual posters. I have zero desire to provoke. I simply wish to remain positive. I also have no agenda to push. I am one individual.)

[Deleted. Promoting one religion over another, and ‘warning’ about a religion, is not appropriate, especially at this time. I don’t want Your NZ to be used for promoting a ‘them against us’ religious agenda. PG]

How can I promote a ‘them against us’ when I am an individual?

Them against us has no reckoning in any of my arguments PG. Clearly, you have a problem with Christianity, which I can respect. But your misrepresenting me I cannot accept.

Christians are the most adept people at tolerance. Are you happy for your grandchildren to grow old amidst confusion of losing our secular society?
