Getting a bit tired of Stuff and their wall to wall opinion pieces on how racist NZ is, in case they missed it the gunmen was an Australian. NZ is not a racist country we are one of the most multi cultural and friendly countries in the world. “The End of Innocence” being the theme.
What is strange is no one is really talking about what happened, just generally at the dog park and out and about chatting with folk and going about the working day people just seem to have moved on.

    • We may well be “one of the most multi cultural and friendly countries in the world” (I think so), but there has been and still is also a lot of racism. Those who are on the receiving end notice it much more than those who are not targets.

Sure there is a little prejudice around the place and on all sides and no doubt within the Muslim community as well but the hyperbole and hand wringing is divisive in itself and based on nothing more than what the journalist learned from a liberal professor and expects to see.
The reality on the ground is diametrically opposite to what is being reported.

Or I should say what is being reported is togetherness but the opinion pieces are where all the divisiveness is being spoken of.

I watched TV 1 coverage last night – that didn’t do much for me either. It was very mushy and focussing how NZer’s have come together in support and the impression I got was that we are all one happy, clappy family now. And this is where the matter will lie.
I’ll be very surprised if this is where the matter lies

It’s not a show of happy clappy family.
Christchurch has been through a lot then this happens and there is a spontaneous show of empathy.
Because he probably lacks it is probably the main failure in his planning.

Noel, I accept that all the pieces shown are relevant, personally I sensed that it was all “bundled” to give a happy, clappy family sense of finality.

I spent a few hours reading international twitter feeds on line last night.
The overwhelming view from around the world is NZ has acted with up most respect and very few were condemning our county or behavour even in the Islamic country’s
That a few seek to use what happened to drum up support for their sick ideas is a given. We are always at risk for a fringe nutter going postal.
However NZ has come out of this mostly looking like the amazing paradise it is .
