There was a great hoohah on the roof last night, which I took to be a possum. But when I knocked on the wall and requested the hoohah maker to stop, I saw a bird flying through the garden from the side of the house where the noise had been. It seemed to have two light bands, but wasn’t a magpie (too small, different flight) What other birds fly at night ? It wasn’t a morepork.

Could it have been an Oystercatcher? who has lost his way going to Ragland or Kawhia. .
They fly at night I have heard when I have been deep in the bush just after dark.

      • Oyster catchers are bigger than magpies (down this way anyway),

It could well have been ! I only knew what it WASN’T. He might have decided to have a rest here and been driven off by whoever was here already. He flew very surely, if you know what I mean, not like a surprised bird who had to take off; he went smoothly under the big tree. I wish that I’d known to look; I happened to be shutting a window and just caught a glimpse of the visitor.
